Reverting to original reg?

If you bought and owned a personal plate, but wanted to revert the car back to its original reg, whats the process and how long does it take?

Do you then get the ownership certificate back on the privately bought reg ready for its next vehicle application?

Remove the private plate from the car. Guess you would have to out on retention which you could lapse if not required.

There is no guarantee you would get the original plate though, but it is likely.

you need to fill in a V317 form and send that away with your V5 and MOT and payment for what you want to do with the plate (put it on retention, on a new car, etc)

usually takes a few weeks... I've just done 3 last month, the v5 came back really quick, then a couple of weeks later the mot and new tax disc was sent

used to be you could just pop into the local office, but Swansea is the place for it all now

Unless the car was first registered on the private plate, the original is automatically reallocated but, if you haven't got a new vehicle to transfer the private plate to, you have to pay for a retention certificate

You need to pay £105 for the pleasure of doing so by putting the plate on retention. I had to do this last month, had the docs back in a week, my retention doc, new MOT, Tax Disk and new V5. Shame I've been waiting almost a month for the V5 for the Z'd so I can get get plate back on.

You can now apply to have the plate put on retention for upto 3 years and if you put the plate onto another car in the first year you will get back £50 (£25 for each of the unused years) and £25 if it's done in the second.

You need to also pay the £105 retention when buying a new car from a dealership too. Used to be pay £80 to transfer the reg but thanks to dvla local office closure you can no longer get this service....even thought it's still offered??

My Z came to me with a private plate on it which I knew was going back to the owner in due course. The dealer (Porsche in Bournemouth) sorted everything with no fuss, and the original plate is back on the car. Just as well really as it matches the original documentation which came with the car.

I just paid £80 to transfer my plate but was straight into my zed took a couple of weeks and my old car got the orignak back .

Technically you could of kept that plate as if the plates not been removed when the car is sold the ownership will transfer to the new owner.

Most BM garages won't sell a car until the private plate has been removed which keeps it showing as 'coming soon' until it's confirmed the plates been removed.

Doesn't work like that anymore unless the dealer has lots of time to kill. Unfortunately as they want the cars shifted as soon as possible then retention at £105 is the only way. It's also the same with new cars. Dealers don't want new cars sat around the dealership waiting on the DVLA getting the docs sorted so will have the car registered to you and then you need to have your plate put in retebtion and then onto the car once you've got the new V5.

Only way around this now for new cars is to have the plate on retention ready to go

A transfer can take upto 6 weeks and has been known to take a lot longer than that during busy times. It used to be that the dealers would send someone to the local office with the docs who would do the transfer usually within a week but that service is gone and your at the mercy of Swansea.

As per Angie4m's posts. I had to do this in November when I sold my 3.0i zed. Takes around 3 weeks

And you can still drive the car on the reg you're getting retained right? You send docs, MOT and Tax disc but your on the system so if pulled all okay. When the DVLA send you all back, that's the moment things change.

Or is that stupidly wrong?!

Yes until you have the docs back from the DVLA you still use the number you are retaining. Once you've got the docs back you can then put the old plate back on the car. I've always waited for the docs before putting the old plate back on. Now you can check via the vehicle enquiry via the tax online system so you know when the plate has been removed if your uber eager to get the plate back on

My E88 was on a pirate plate from new so it had to be assigned a number so if I had been retaining my plate then selling the car then I wouldn't of known what the new number would be until I got the docs from the DVLA and I couldn't have a plate with those details made up until I had a V5 from the DVLA.

Or private plate even not a pirate plate aargh  you can get the docs online https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/209585/V317_140313.pdf

Hopefully they aren't too busy at the moment so you'd get the docs back sooner rather than later
