Reversing camera angle

I was just looking to buy and install a decent reversing camera (fitted near the number plate) and noticed that there are different. Amerà angles offered. Some are 110 degrees, others 170/175…. Has anyone got experience of whether these ultra wide angle ones are actually too wide and make things look to distorted ?

That’s the one I have …yes the image is distorted but all you’re trying to do is see where everything is..as I found out to my cost..you can have say a pole which is in line with the rear wheel and with narrower angle camera it will be off field..

This is mine, it's supposed to be 170° (can't confirm). This is set up with the iDrive internal camera option, hence the picture in the smaller box, if used with an mmi box then it could be full width of the screen.

Do they work in the dark?

I can miss most things with the front & rear radar, but the lack of a rear reversing light is a real nuisance.

Mine doesn't really, until I press the brake pedal and it illuminates whatever is there. You can get cameras that have the infrared LED's around the lens that "should" help with nightvision, but I wouldn't rely on it.

I wanted to ask, I ended up buying my parking camera yesterday, and have watched your video on your YT channel. I have the Mr12Volt MMI box already installed and working (although interestingly it looks like I always have to have the volume ‘on’ in order for it to work - or at least for CarPlay to display ).

My understanding is that the RCA cable will run from the reversing camera and present AHD720 to the MMI box which will display it on the idrive display and the MMI box will pick up reverse being selected from the canbus and then display the image from the camera. I assume the camera still needs to be powered so do you recommend powering off the reversing light or another source ?

Yes, if you press the volume button (mute all) it pauses what's playing (CD, USB), it also stops the Mr12volt box from displaying properly, this is normal

You can power the camera from the reverse light, but i highly recommend using one of these...

Without this the image can glitch and stutter, this box smooths the power signal and steadies the image
