Retrofit of BMW alarm kit?

After reading another post on the subject, I just now realized that my 2003 Z wasn't fitted with the motion/movement detector alarm system. I don't have a bonnet switch and nothing happens when I create movement in the interior footwell while alarm is armed. I do have the blinking light under the rearview mirror, but I now wonder what purpose it serves...

After doing a google search, I found that BMW sells a retrofit kit for pre-wired cars (part 65 0 73 152 393) and located installation instructions. Has anyone ever done this retrofit, or can anyone bring any information on cost or level of difficulty to install?

I had one installed at a dealership about a year ago. Honestly, I dont know that I'd waste money on it. It's not very loud, it's prone to false alarms, and they dont even offer a paging feature or shock sensor. I guess it's better than nothing, but just barely. 2 indy shops tried to fit aftermarket alarms, but gave up due to the wiring/incompatibility. I would have much preferred a Viper alarm. This is a major Z4 flaw. By the way, you have to have a dealer or Indy program the alarm, so just installing it won't make it functional.

note that the blinking light can be programmed at the dealer (or any indy with a GT1) even if you don't have an alarm. Your lights will flash on lock/unlock and your interior LED light will flash when locked. But the car isn't actually armed. Do you hear the BEEP BEEP sound when arming/disarming the car?

Also this may not be the right forum to be asking this, as far as I know UK cars came from the factory with alarms.

Got the blinking LED under the mirror and lights do flash when lock/unlock. That's why I thought I had the complete alarm system... :? Not a big deal in the end, since my Z is a garage queen for weekend strolls only.

Hi,

Does anybody know what codes needed to get this blink function activated when the car is locked ( Without the siren or hood contact mounted)?
I am intrested to have this because in my opinion the blinking light is the 95% of the alarm function). I had the car in to do this and the mec ( obviously not authorized BMW) said he had all the codes activated but the lamp still doesn´t blink. Anybody knows if this could be done like the post before and I just had an unskilled mec?

My car is 2006 Z4 3.0 Si Coupe

Regards

Peter

Hi Peter,

I installed the retrofit alarm myself. Difficulty is moderate. The worst part is installing the piece in the middle console. There is quite a bit to tear out, but as long as you are patient and follow the instructions you will be fine. You can search for the instructions on the web. You do indeed need to take your car after you install the alarm to the stealer to have them program it. I live in the US, and it cost me $100 USD. I was a simple 1 hr wait and leave process. Lights blink, alarm horn beeps now with locking and unlocking. I think a well worth mod.
