Retro fitting electric mirrors

Hi all,

I have recently purchased a paid of electric mirror and now i'm after a bit of guidance to help me get them installed. I want them to fold when the car is locked.

Apart from the two mirrors, what else is needed and can anyone talk me through the process of fitting :)

Many thanks :)

I had my set fitted by Peter Van Der Veer over in Huddersfield, who will find plenty of references to him on the forum, he did them whilst I waited and that included constructing loom extension to make them work. Not sure about them folding when the car is locked. I know Mike (Ducklakeview) has been playing with his set, but not sure if he has got them to fold on locking yet. If he has I will be off to see him in summer for a bit of coding

Ok, where to start lol..

I have done this on mine, it wasn't as straightforward as I thought it was going to be.

Firstly, what is the build date of your car, and do you know that of the donor car, as the looms and wiring vary.

Secondly, have you got all of the bits? Ideally you need the full looms from both doors, you also need the drivers window switch, the mirrors (obvs) and the control unit.

First off, I'd be locating the multiplug that the module needs to connect to, if that isn't there then you are looking at major surgery to get them working. It "should" be tied to the main loom up above the glovebox, behind the air vent area..

Hi, thats great, what did he charge you?

Did you need anything apart from the mirrors?

How are yours controlled to make fold?

Thanks.

Hi Mike.

All this sounds very complected and i fear it may be worse as i don't know what year car they were off.

Mine is a 2006 though.

It IS possible to get them to fold on locking via coding, but to my knowledge, no one has gotten them to unfold. I'm determined to get mine to work so that they fold on locking AND unfold when the ignition is turned on. TBH, having to fold them manually before you get out is a PITA as you then can't see cars coming as you get out..

Need to look at the door looms. My donor car was a facelift, but mine is one of the early ones. My drivers door loom wasn't wired for mirrors, so I had to swap for the later one, however it's not a straight swap as the plug and wiring for the elec window motor is different between the two. My car DID have the socket for the control module though.

Here's my post about it; https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=101665&hilit=folding

Mine is a pre October 2004 model which BMW fitted the full loom to, but even then it didn't include the passenger side hence Peter constructed that piece of the loom for me. I am not sure now what he charged, but whatever it was it was money well spent. As somebody has already said, you will need a replacement switch to operate the electric mirrors, which are often available on ebay and the control unit

Strange, as mine is a July 04 build, and my drivers door loom needed changing, but the passenger door one was wired for the folding mirrors.

Still not got mine sorted :( I’ve got mirrors, switch is fitted and module which I can’t find where to plug in. I tried emailing that Peter name mentioned above but they didn’t get back to me :(

My car is a 53 plate 3.0l I did this last summer. Apart from fitting the mirrors, the module behind the glovebox and the window switch in the drivers door the only changes to the car was to fit donor drivers loom. I had to change the position of one of the thick window motor wires in the multiplug to match the position of the original door loom. Passengers loom was identical to the donor passengers loom.
So on my car, fairly straight forward luckily.
I'd love to find out how to do the folding on locking and unlocking etc but have no experience with the coding really..
