Retro-fit side airbag disable function

Hi all

I have just bought a 2nd hand Z4 and was not aware (until I read the manual) that they recommend disabling the side airbags if you have a child in a child seat or booster. However, this can only be done if the feature is installed.

My first question is whether it really is a big deal having them on with a car seat or booster (I have a 3 and a 5 year old). The second is, assuming the bags really should be disabled, is it possible to have the disable function retro-fitted?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Cheers

I thought they all came with the disable function.
I'd say it's a big deal, the force of the airbag on a little body will do much more damage than good. Break a few bones at minimum.
Not sure if you can retrofit the disable function, the dealer will be the only person who can really tell you that I think. You can always disable all your airbags though. Pulling the fuse, or disconnecting one of the seat belt buckle airbag plugs from your under your seat will disable your SRS system (also throw a fault-code and your airbag light will on the dash).

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I've done a bit more research and it seems that the powers that be changed their position in 2005 and stated that although side airbags represent a risk to children, that risk it outweighed by the benefits. The advice in the manual seems to have changed accordingly by 2005.

Cheers
