Retention Certificate

Finally got around to sending off an application to retain my personal plate - couple of questions :

No where did they ask for the MOT certificate - I know it's all on computer nowadays - do they reprint it with the old number on it ?

I see it's valid for 10 years - previously it was free to put on a new vehicle - is this still the case or do they rob you of another £80 when you want to put it it on a new vehicle ?

if WBAC come up with the same valuation when it was on a personal plate I'll probably let them have it although it seems a shame to let them make a profit - would rather a private buyer benefits but we'll see.

It depends on how much you paid Gov.

Its normally £105 for a year on retention ( £80 transfer + £25 for a year on retention) Or, £155 for three years on retention. If you go for the three year option, it saves you the hassle, but if you put it back onto a vehcile after 18 months you will not get a credit.

The transfer onto your next vehicle is included in the cost.

Ive never known one be valid for 10 years before, unless its a new option.

The fee for retaining the vrm is now £80 - I was surprised as I've had the plate for 21 years - also it can be renewed free after 10 years .

Here's the link - hopefully I've read it correctly

For those not up to date with the changes:

From today (9 March 2015), the law has changed to reduce the fee to retain a personalised registration from £105 to £80. This will apply to both paper and online transactions.

This change sees the removal of the £25 fee currently in place to renew the retention of a vehicle registration number on an annual basis. The renewal period is also extended to 10 years. There is another added benefit, the fee is being removed to add or change nominee details.

Customers will see a significant reduction in turnaround times following the introduction of this service. DVLA systems will be updated in real time and the service will provide instant confirmation that the application has been successful.

So what happens next? The vehicle registration certificate (V5C) with the replacement registration number and retention certificate is issued by post to the registered keeper on DVLA’s records. There will no longer be a replacement MOT certificate issued to the keeper as the original remains valid.

In answer to your question Gov, you now pay £80 and that's it. It's £80 to transfer straight away or £80 to put on retention to then apply at a later date. It used to be £105 to do it all in a one'er plus £25 if you then wanted to retain it which started to happen when local offices were closed.

Also no MOT cert sent too as the old one is still valid for the car.

Although now changed Number5 if you had put the car on a three year retention you would have been credited back for whole years not used. That was also brought in when they closed local offices because it forced peopl to have to apply for a retention before they could transfer to a new car. But now they've done away with all that nonsense. Which is great and saves me some dosh.

You can also apply to take the reg off the car online too between 8am and 6pm https://www.personalisedvehicleregistration.service.gov.uk/retain/vehicle-lookup
Seems an instant service so if just opt for that to be honest Gov

Apologies Gov, I didnt know that !

I stand corrected, ...just like the man in the Orthopaedic shoes !

To be honest it's not something they've been shouting about and unless you were looking to take a plate off a car you'd just assume it was the same old rip off. And it's now helped highlight the change to everyone on here

No, sneaky buggers. I did changes in Jan and Feb and knew nothing about any impending changes.
If I'd known it was going to be free, I would have put my HAT55S plate on my new zed but I thought my daughter would want it within 12-18 months and I didnt want to pay again to take it off so soon.

This is good news :)
I have a spare plate that's been on retention for about 5 years, paying £25 every August to retain the plate.
Will they send some kind of no fee renewal in August when the retention runs out ?

I agree with Angie here - having just put the plate off my Zed on retention for 10 years including the £80 assignment fee - not too bad a deal now. But do we get a 4th car in that timescale to stick it on . . .?

This seems to be an improvement! First for DVLA. Anyone actually done a complete transfer recently?

How do you mean ? I did buy another which is now on the Boxster - another fairly straightforward process and quite quick. Bought the plate from DVLA so cost included the £80 xfer fee.

No, I meant take a reg off your existing car, put plate on retention, get new or reissued original plate back for existing car, sell that car, buy new car, transfer plate off retention. Was always a bit slow but OK when the DVLA local offices were open. After they shut down was a complete PITA.

No - sorry too complex for me ! hope someone else can answer.

Well - I guess I did almost as the Zed then reverted to it's original plate - not a new plate. Just that I didn't use the zed's old plate on the boxster - but another - it wouldn't have taken much longer though agree it was easier when you could go to an office ( in Glasgow) and organise it on the day.

It's much easier than it used to be as you can now do everything on-line

-- Fill-in the on-line form and pay the £80 fee to get a Retention ID (valid for 10 years)

-- Once you have a Retention ID you can then fill in another on-line form to assign the number to a different car.

There are no extra charges to assign the reg number to the new car as this is covered by the £80 fee for the retention ID.

I didnt know it changed either... The real bugger for me is i put my plate on retention in Jan when i sold my Z... And its only valid for a yr.... And i cant decide to put it on the TT or on the wifes car when she changes it at the end of the yr.

Plate changed are easy. Fill the online form in online and it the v778 will be back with you within a week.

If you want to add a nominee do that once it's back and this is free and again will be processed very quickly.

From taking my plate off and giving it to someone else took 20mins web time, 10 mins including posting once back and about 10 days in time :) and £80 of course.
