Retaining Private plate options??

Hi all.

I’m after a little advice regarding retaining a private plate when selling a car.

Is there anyway of doing this AT THE SAME TIME as selling the car (changing keeper)?

From what I’ve read, I would have to remove (retain) the plate, then wait 4-6 weeks for a new V5 logbook with the old reissued plate on - then sell the car.

Or come to an agreement (trust) with the buyer of the car, for him to remove the plate, once he has bought the car and put it in my name on the retention certificate.

Thoughts please....any other options?

Thanks.

You can put your existing plate on retention online nowadays using the DVLA website. The new logbook with the replacement registration then only takes a few days to come through, pre Covid anyway.

Thanks - just completed it online and it says 3-5 days for new log book once I’d finished the application

So the 4-6 weeks mentioned must be for postal applications I guess.

cool, sounds like you're doing the right thing. if you're thinking of selling a car with a private plate on, first thing you do is get the plate taken off and the original put back on, with a v5c to match.

i bought a car a while back where the seller tried to transfer ownership and take off a private plate at the same time. the change of ownership came through fine, but then i owned his private plate, and had to faff around transferring it back to him, waiting to see what my new reg was going to be, getting new plates made up, and informing my insurer of a change of numberplate.
