Reset throttle adaptions

Is this a real thing?

By which I mean, ignition on - hold accelerator in full for 1 minute, key out for 2 minutes, then restart.

On my DCT it feels like something changed after I did this. Is it all in my head?

Did it reset the throttle & gear change points like I hoped?

Do people do this sometimes?

Seen videos on this, be it for my 30i with ZF 6 speed and have to say that yes it does work. Not sure how or why though.

I've only done it tonight, but in the first 30 minute drive I've noticed a significant change.

Much more zippy away from the lights when in normal mode, higher than expected MPG, and no clunk when showing to a stop.

Will keep an eye on it for a few days to be sure.

Feeling quite pleased, but need more time to be conclusive.

I sometimes wondered if BMW might have copied Rover.
My old MGTF pumping the throttle 3-5 times reset the adapted throttle response, sort of quick tune up.
I sometimes wondered if dealer service did this to give the impression they had "improved" the car through servicing..
Normally a couple of aggressive accelerations would put it into similar sporty mode.
Drive like a grannie would drive like Z4 normal mode.

On my Foxwell reader there are various adaption resets for the Z4.
Auto box is one of them.

Another little drive this morning - something is certainly different.

Most noticeably it's using the gears more like I would do myself in a manual.

Previously it was sprinting through the gears up to 7th at 30mph, then under modest acceleration it would stay in 7th & speed up slowly. Also, pulling away from the traffic lights was a very gentle experience unless you pressed quite deep into the accelerator.

Since the reset - only changes upto 5th (sometime 6th) at 30mph. 7th gear not until 40. Any acceleration drops you a gear instantly. Pulling away from the lights now is much stronger without going mad on the accelerator pedal.

Tinkiling around town MPG is staying steady at 26mpg - previously was more like 21mpg around town. This needs a bit more time to be sure, but will monitor over the coming week & see if it's more than a placebo.

Very pleased.

Exact procedure:

(i) Foot firmly down on accelerator - hold it there until end of step (iii)
(ii) Key in, foot off brake, press start/stop to turn on the ignition but not start the engine.
(iii) Wait 1 minute - then click the key to remove it, take foot off accelerator
(iv) Wait 2 minutes

Then start car & drive as normal.

Would be good for a few of us to try this out - cost is 3 minutes of time. You will either see no change OR it will be an improvement.

BMW used to own Rover, of course. My pet hate on my Rover 75 was the fuel gauge, which was actually a 'miles remaining' gauge. If you drove around town quite a bit, and then got on the motorway so the fuel consumption improved, the fuel gauge would increase

I've spent an hour reading around - seems like this trottle reset procedure has been doing the rounds for a decade or more.

Half the internet reckons it is fantastic & makes a huge difference / other half says it is nonsense.

Nice & clear :D
