Replica BMW?

Many marques now have small firms producing clones of older cars like D type and XKE Jags and such for silly money. The one that I'd be tempted to step up for would be a BMW 507 with an S54 driveline. Has anyone done that before?

Except that this is the version I'd want (with suitably modern wheel and tire sizes).

The 507 'kit' is being sold by a UK company called Tribute Automotive. Based on the Z3 (as many are). I know of one person who took a Z3m roadster (which had been in an accident IIRC) and has built a 507 replica on it. The bodykit is not expensive, just the rest of it is!

The Z3 forum has a 'rebody' section. Details are on there. His username is 'Pingu'.

Thanks, I'll take a look. Although I have never been fond of the Z3 suspension/handling and you'd have to start with a late car to get the S54 engine. I drove a couple of Z3s and as an old racer, I found their handling so-so. Then I drove the Z4M and there was no going back!

That particular 507 (22 GKN/chassis 70067) was owned from new by the late John Surtees for almost 60 years. Count Domenico Agusta of MV Agusta motorcycles wanted to buy Surtees a gift as a reward for winning the 1956 500cc World Championship. Surtees knew what he wanted, Agusta baulked at the price of £3,200  ...so Surtees suggested they went 50:50 and the deal was done.
Surtees passed away in March '17 aged 83 and the car with others from his collection was auctioned by Bonhams in July '18. Only 252 examples of the 507 were built and approximately 200 now survive. It sold for £3.8 million ! :o
A fascinating story  https://cars.bonhams.com/auction/24876/lot/330/the-john-surtees-cbe-one-owner-from-new1957-bmw-507-roadster-with-hardtop-chassis-no-70067/

There was a great programme on BBC2 in 2015 when John Surtees showed Paul Hollywood around his garage that had the 507 in it that is well worth tracking down.
