Replace battery without visiting dealer

Is it necessary to keep power to the battery cables when replacing the battery so that computer settings are retained?
I don't mind resetting the clock and radio but I really don't want to pay the dealer to reset the computer codes.

Not required, I have disconnected the battery plenty of times whilst working on the car without having to do anything except setting the clock again.

Agree as I have had my battery discconnected 3 times without any issues except the clock.

If your worried, I've kept power to the car by opening the hood, and with jumper cables and a good battery or other car as if you were to boost start the car, you can simply remove the battery in the trunk while still having full power, works nicely and not much of a hassle.

I lost the following info when Iremoved the battery last weekend

trip
avg mpg
avg mph
clock

thats was it, no other problems
