Bit of a blast from the past, i hired a caterham7 for the day a couple of years ago as I’d been curious about them for some time :?
Pretty hardcore of course, which really killed it for mrs Smartbear (especially when she got oil on her new shoes )
I loved it, hopeless as a practical car but you won’t get a purer driving experience

But I'd really like a bit more metal around me in a road car - but for a track car a Caterham has to be hard to beat.

Ha, everything is relative i suppose- I’m used to plenty of miles on motorbikes so i didn’t dwell to much on the “crumple zones”
I don’t suppose it would be great being involved in an accident in one, but they’re so nimble & agile you would probably have time to indicate before avoiding any oncoming muppets...
I’m settling into retired life in the country fine thanks, it’s a bit different from Essex around here

This months Lotus 7 (Caterham) magazine 'Low Flying' has an article about a guy who walked away from an SUV on top of his car following an accident - if I find a link to electronic copy I'll post it! Didn't think I should photo and post it.

Got to love the space frame and if you draw a line from the top of the engine block to the top of the FIA roll bar the driver and passenger are contained below it

Except for whiplash, I was unscathed in the high speed crash that wrote off my first Westfield. That said, I was very lucky since the lighting fixture that fell about 12 metres from the lamp post landed next to the rear wheel, missing my head by less than a metre. I wouldn’t want to be hit from behind in one given that the fuel tank is effectively the rear bumper!

Been thinking about the exact same for a while, how was the rental experience? Is there any haggling to be done? £350 for 2 days is a bit of a stretch, but I do want to properly test one out before committing.

Hi, I only hired for the one day & didn’t try haggling-if it was with a view to purchasing I’m sure you could come to a bit of a deal on the price of the car? The showroom is worth walking round with the great cars on display 8)
They were a bit sloppy with communication leading up to the day, but once we arrived it was all fine, lovely countryside location with perfect roads & scenery to enjoy a car like the caterham

I was very aware of the exhaust on my side :? They do have a heat shield over them, but i still didn’t want to touch it!
