Removing the front grill

So the silver part does not detach from the black? If one were to change the color of the outer ring you would have to either paint it or put something over it?? How is the chrome piece attached to the black part?
 
I see what your saying. Yes you can separate the chrome from (in your case black part). It has plastic tabs (8) that can easily be lifted to separate.

 
Thank you for your response Citation 650. I would much rather have a piece that would replace the chrome part. I don't like the idea of gluing it on. I'm afraid of the durability of the pieces. If a bug hits it or a rock hits it I don't know how well it's going to clean up. Then what will I do, replacement parts are $41 dollars for each side. Has anyone on here used a similar part? I took some pictures of them on the car I'll post them up in a minute.

That would really look good on your black/black/black.
 
Please excuse the dirt it rained yesterday. :( Neverthless, here are the pictures of the grille. I just propped the piece up - no epoxy yet. The pics didn't come out as well as I expected them to.

This one has the piece only on the left side.

This is one of those useful little things that's rarely mentioned. :thumbsup:

I thought about posting my own how-to for this exact topic, but it occurred to me that slipping in the garage and knocking the grill out with my elbow might not be the most effective method (yes, I actually did this about a year ago :oops: )
 
I feel stupid. I don't understand the picture...

I'm trying to remove the entire front grill so I can apply the Bavarian Autosport black cover to the chrome part. In the image above, it says to push upward and pull towards yourself?

Can anyone help me out? How do you remove the grill?
 
^+ pull from the bottom first, not the whole thing at once.

Also... re the chrome trim rings;
be very careful with the tabs, they snap off VERY easliy.
Just ease them up with a knife blade (or similar implement) JUST enough to work it off.
Go around the ring one tab at a time.

BTW... I blacked out my rings with vinyl trim tape (made for this type of job) available through most auto supply sources.

Looks great, doesn't chip & can always be restored back to OE condition.

So basically push the grill upwards toward the sky then pull the bottom part away from the car? How is the assembly installed? Is it just clips? How much force should I expect to apply?
 
Ah ok nvm, I got it.

1. Lift grill upwards.
2. While doing so, gently pull the bottom of the grill away from the bumper.

It comes off very easily so if the bottom isn't sliding out with minimal pressure, lift higher and try again.

Hey! When did you do that?! :wink: The tape doesn't crinkle around the curves at all? That would be a good project for tomorrow.

I've had it on for almost a year now.
A little heat from a hair dryer helps to stretch the tape into place.
It is much easier with an assistant to hold the frame while you work the tape.
 
BTW I used the Bavarian Autosport black out grill covers. Fitment is perfect and the finish on the covers themselves are very nice and clean. I'll update tomorrow when the glue is done drying and I install them back into the car.
 
Okay, inTgr8r, I have the blackout tape. I went to pep boys today because advance didn't have it yesterday and pep boys has wayyy more stuff. I ended up going in for a $5 roll of tape and ended up spending $50. LOL I'll post up some pics when I'm finished. Thanks for the idea!

Good luck with it.... it takes a little patience to get it right.
LOL... I had a couple of do-overs on the first one.
I started the tape on the upper part near the center (of the car), it helped hide the edge.

Also here's the thread that gave me the idea... Blackout tape shadowline trim
