removing sat nav

my sat nav is totally goosed, it works it doesnt. it whirrs and clicks etc etc. reading about it seems like its a common problem and there seems to be plenty of places that you can send it off to to be fixed properly with a yrs guarantee for a reasonable amount ~£150

so my question is, how the crap do you get it out? you would think it easy and be a bit like a radio but it looks like you have to remove loads of trim. is there a guide anywhere?

also if i take it out will the radio still work?

Which part of the Nav are you wanting to remove? The screen, the Command Unit (the head unit) or the Navicomputer (DVD drive between the seats)?

The first two are relatively straightforward, the latter is...well, it's pretty annoying to get out.

If it's the Navicomputer, look for the guide on how to fit the 6 disc Autochanger. It's pretty much identical.

its the dvd drive between the seats, i thought this was the main unit for the sat nag. im getting loads of disc errors, not reading the disc, disc not present type things and all roads point to the dvddrive.

so looking about the options seem to be, 1.fiddle with the pots on the laser. it may work but if the laser is on its way out only postpones the problem. 2. replace the laser crade (cost ~£40 ish) 3.replace the whole drive (easier than the cradle but costs ~130 last time i looked) 4. send it away and have a guaranteed fix with warranty for 150. all of them requre me to take it out tho :headbang:

it does look annoying to take out. pants. thanks for the heads up

There is a Dutch company that sell the mechanism to completely repair a Mk4 DVD unit.

I've never done it but understand that it's pretty simple as long as you have a steady hand with the soldering iron. For €126 you get the laser repair, which most of the online guys do and a new mechanism.
You still have to get the Nav computer out but this could be an option when it's on the bench.

yeah ive seen the £85 one but imnot convinced about sending the unit to romania. i know there shoudlnt be a problem but its a bit outside of my comfort zone. i know a few people from romania and they were sceptical. not of the work but more of the chance it wouldnt get back to me.

replacing the dvd drive is no3 on my list and im certainly tempted but im not that good at soldering and wouldnt trust myelf to be able to do it properly or not to bugger something up.

the services all come with warranties for 1 year so for the little extra in cost seems to be worth it.
