Ok so as i continue the battle to locate the most irritating plastic creaking sound coming from behind my passenger seat i think i might have to start stripping down the trim to locate it. seen as ive never done anything like this before, does anyone know how to do this? ie what's required in terms of tools and where to start? are there any guides with pictures? im desperate to get rid of the creaking!

Keep us posted. I also have a sound coming from the back when hardtop is on and so far I have deleted it by putting a piece of cloth in between the trim and the softop edge.

I have similar from mine. I had all of the trim out the other week and its worst now. I did have 2 screws left over so I need to find where they go 
My tip would be to buy some sticky-backed felt from a craft shop to stick on hidden joints where two pieces of plastic meet. I've done this in a number of areas to good effect.

you dont have any pictures do you? ive got no idea where to start looking!
What I did is use a piece of cloth and stuck it in various places to reduce the movement of plastics. This helped me pinpoint which exact part is making the noise. At the moment I have pinpointed it, stopped the sound with the cloth but am a bit afraid to take everything apart in case the sound is worse after....so probably the cloth will just stay there for a while. I chose black to make it as less visible as possible.

ah thanks! i believe we have different issue however as mine is coming from behind the passenger seat. it looks like yours it the roof locking mechanism
Actually its not from the locking mechanism. On the left of the mechanism where we have the whole left trim part the upper section is a bit wobbly. So when there is pressure coming from the stowed top it makes the plastics rub, thus squeaking annoyingly... 
You have to take a friend for a drive and make him apply pressure to various parts until you find which one is actually making the sound.

All starts with the fold down door of the centre storage. There's a PDF bmw guide on fitting cd changer etc that details it step by step. Search on here for cd changer and it should come up. It's really pretty straight forward and each piece removed makes the next accessible to remove.
