Remote Software Upgrade

So my BMW Ap says “upload to BMW completed” for the latest software update 07/2021.85. However, no further instructions on my in car screen as yet. Can’t recall it taking this long last time it updated so not sure what’s going on? Cant find the new update in settings either. Anyone know what’s happening on what I can do?

I've got the same problem. I remember last year about this time and one of the requirements is that the outside temp is above 10 degrees. I have no idea why. Once the weather warmed up, it notified me to start the update.

I suppose BMW must have a reason for this temp restriction but I have no idea why.

Mine did an auto map update recently.

Is there no option in the app to start the update?

I finally got the RSU showing a couple of weeks ago, although others got it in July iirc. Downloaded to phone ok and uploaded to car driving into work next day, then finishes whilst parked. Pretty sure it was not above 10C driving in.

Interesting...download upgrade to phone - phone connects to car and uploads the package - car installs upgrade when stationary. The package took a little while to upload, but it carries on when you are driving. The upgrade took about 20 minutes.

Check whether your phone is connected to the car via wifi as well. The RSU relies on wifi to transfer data from phone to car. Therefore, if if phone and car only connect via bluetooth, the RSU won't take place.

So the weather has been above 10c but my software upgrade still didn't start today. Bang goes that theory. No idea why it hasn't started yet.

I’ve had confirmation of the successful upload to my car but it’s just it’s the installation (next step) bit that’s not progressing. This is the part that you need to be parked up for and follow instructions on the screen. Maybe it’s still getting ready?

There is indeed, and I was going to check where it was in the morning but instead I've just remembered I have the handbook downstairs, so to summarise the relevant bits (pp61-63):

  • the car automatically searches for updates itself in the background (no mention of how frequently!) using its own data connection
  • you can force a check using the car's own data connection with the menu option Car -> Settings -> General settings -> Remote Software Upgrade -> Search for upgrades
  • if downloading via the phone app, connect the phone to the car via WiFi (Android) or WiFi+Bluetooth audio (iOS), then 'the transfer of the upgrade to the vehicle occurs in the background only while driving' - once complete, 'follow the instructions in the control display'
  • there's also a section on starting the installation 'once all prerequistes have been met', which is the menu option Car -> Settings -> General settings -> Remote Software Upgrade -> Start upgrade now

The prerequisites for starting the upgrade are listed as:

  • adequate charge state of the battery
  • outside temperature above -10 C / 14 F
  • on level ground
  • hazard lights off
  • gearbox in P
  • engine off and sufficiently cooled down
  • automatic engine start for pre-conditioning disabled (??)

It says that if these are not met, the upgrade will not be offered for installation - but also that you should pay attention for any offers to install it, for example after a long drive. Which seems to contradict some of the above!

Other preparatory suggestions listed include guaranteeing mobile phone reception so that an error message can be sent if the installation is cancelled, requiring that a key be present in the vehicle before it will allow you to consent to the upgrade, and that devices plugged into the OBD port should be disconnected. It also warns that it might remove any non-BMW modifications to the car's software (explicitly calling out performance maps!), and that non-BMW changes to the electrical system might cause the installation to fail. Installation can apparently take up to 20 minutes and cannot be interrupted, but you can leave it to it and come back later.

So, -10C not 10C, makes a bit more sense.
Mine upgraded after a 40 mile motorway drive into work, I did notice however when I checked the app whilst the update was happening that the car had not locked itself on my exit.

Update complete! I drove around 15 miles today and on stopping, the notification came up on the screen to say I can now install the update. Did it when I got back home as car needs to be parked up. Must have been getting itself ready in the background?

Note to self, must read more carefully!

I knew I'd read 10c somewhere but forgot about the minus before it. :D
