Remaps / Piggyback Tuning boxes

Hi all,

I have a good amount of experience with remaps on the 1.8 20vt VAG engine but never a BMW.

I've used Revo and AMD in the past.

I'm looking at tuning options for my 28i and wanted peoples opinions and experiences.

I'm unlikely to go any further than the map / panel filter.

Are these piggyback boxes safe?

Will it throw up fault codes?

Can the std clutch on the auto box cope with the extra torque?

Hi and welcome, another 28i joining the crew.

Remaps are always best, but fairly permanent solution.
Regarding piggy back systems - I would recommend two options.
1) JB4: Ideal if you want to go to Stage 2 (Cats removed) - and look at error codes - but not as comprehensive as Carley
2) Racechips: not as feature rich as JB4, but comes with 2 yr warranty - but ideal if you want to keep to stage 1.

With both methods you should get around 285Bhp - and be close to most 3 Ltr cars.

There is no real value in a K&N filter - however I do have one

Twin turbo knows his stuff and has a great car Ive raced against him. Well tried to keep up at least, nice cars these e89 with some tuning can go far.

I was in the bad lane with no grip.

Next time im bringing the 2.5 si and i'll be on 18's not 19's. Im ready roll on 2017

I'm leaning towards the JB4 as I've heard a lot about them from reading about 135i's and 335i's.

As long as these are safe!

I know the panel filter won't do anything, but it's nice knowing it's there!

I don't want to make the car loud or anything so I don't fancy removing cats or fitting a loud exhaust or anything. Power around 290-300bhp would be perfect for me!

Please be aware that with the JB4 you need to attach via the canbus. The OBC route is not supported on the E89 as it's a E class car, the OBC only supported for F class cars.

Regarding reliability I had no issues for nearly three years. Just keep to map 1, since you sticking to stage 1

You need to Tap wires into the Canbus which is located in the DMU box - so it is visible that an JB4 has been installed - it is an intrusive MOD

JB4 is for turbo cars - your 2.5 is a different kind of Modifications:

i bet its nice in this cool air we got now best time for performance but limtied traction. Over 300bhp is good to achieve you should be happy. I know it is a quick car and beats a lot about on the scene. I will get E89 probably next year i know a lot bang on about Z4 coupes but i just prefer the roadsters.

I always remap my petrol bmw's. A lot of will see its not worth it (mainly the ones who never done a remap) but ive always had good results. Even if you add 10 bhp to your 2.5 it will be beter than it was before. If its manual too the rev limit is raised and the car is just much more lively to drive giving more torque at your lower point of rpm range. Its the torque that really is noticable and best thing really. I can recommend tuner in midlands for remap if your local

Oh right, so not plug and play then? I'd prefer something that doesn't require any alterations so maybe the racechips option is better?
