Remapped my Zed

Much nicer throttle fidelity with 25% throttle equalling 25% of maximal acceleration. Not only that but it feels like a slightly mushy cable throttled car in response. I'm running richer on idle/closed loop which has removed almost all of the 1st & 2nd gear slow speed surging/hunting & makes the idle buttery smooth. Open throttle acceleration is just epic, especially in sport(+) mode and much more controllable.

I forgot to do a calibration & reference run at the beginning of my session so I’ve not got an accurate measure of exactly what the car did. But based in its previous 428Nm at the wheels I have 482Nm/237kW in comfort & 519Nm/261kW in sport.

forget to mention its now like star ship enterprise pulling just under 400BHP!

How does the chaise handle the power?

Rolling road or mail order chip set, or both?

If I didn't also use my roady for daily commuting I'd be well tempted to up its ooomph but I'm concerned at the impact on fuel efficiency and range... atm I'm getting circa 400 to a tank from my 35i manual.

TBH out of the 4 cars I have had remapped - fuel economy has not really reduced - only due to me using the loud button more often

Well that's a matter of perspective. I currently 'only' need 4th rather than 3rd to keep my R1200 RS in sight... accelerating from 50mph in 6th.

I'm running lighter 18" wheels wrapped in 265/35R18 Uniroyal Rain Sport 3 tyres. I've also got the rear camber to a shade under -2 deg. So far not had a problem, while it has more power & a shed load more torque it's more controllable.

Rolling road with MHD. I prefer the RR because it's much more controllable.

Well I was cruising at lorry speed on the motorway at 55-60mpg, it used to be 50-60mpg. Follow my fuelly & find out, that said. Mapping was done in 2nd & 3rd so the next fuel up may well be much lower.

Finally bit the bullet! I've been enjoying 'Ziggy' (the kids name all our cars) for 18 months now and during that time various thoughts percolating about how to make him better. He's a 3.0i M-Sport by the way...

So stage 1 now underway: full custom exhaust system with 2.75" pipe, and twin outlet (not quad). Full remap. Caliber painted red, roll hoops Alpine White. Already have 12mm spacer on the rear.

Stage 2 sometime when I get him back; installing Eisman springs (doing it meself) and CSL style 19" alloys. (Anyone who is interested in a completely unmarked set of 18" 295's complete with rubber let me know, about 5mm tread to rear, 6 on the fronts. Car has only done 10k in 5 years because the first owner kept it as a toy and only drove it in the dry.

Quite excited to see how it works out!

Sounds good, and Welcome to the Forum!

It seems to be doing better with the extra torque :scratchhead:. May just be the whole thing is a lot more controllable.

Anyway. I was sent the calibration data for a power run about 15min before I started on the RR and also the calibration run for the guy after me (about 45-50 min latter). So that's 237.9kW/429.2Nm baseline, 241.3kW/485.4Nm comfort & 265.7kW/523.9Nm. I'd noticed that in sport mode the gunshot crack was louder but I've been told that under hard acceleration from around 3500rpm in sport/manual it's apparently spitting flames :o

WOW! that is one powefull engine - just need to get some different Downpipes - and induction kit.

So in my simple terms you achieving around 355 bhp at the wheels

About that yes. But more importantly 385lbft of old school torque, that's about 5lbft more than a 335dx at the wheels.

Impressive numbers & interesting to hear the Uni Rs3 tyre choice :? how are they coping with the step up in torque & performance ? My son is about to fit them on his heavily tweaked Scirocco R (350bhp fwd)
As for the 3.5i &Is :driving: these motors offer crazy bang for bucks RE year/miles/spec when compared with any similar alternatives & not silly £ to maintain

Why the RS3? It ticked the right boxes; Low interior noise levels, excellent wet weather properties, compliant ride & predicable in almost all conditions. I wasn’t looking for ultimate grip/performance but an excellent all-round high performance touring tyre.

If you’re a point & squirt merchant then the RS3 will struggle, they’re not a UHP/track day tyre. However, if you’re smooth & progressive they’re more than up to the job only struggling to put power down in 1st gear, but then again so do semi-slick track day tyres.

Slightly off topic... sorry

Going to BMW Owners Track day @ croft on the 18th - so I have a better appreciation of these Michelin Pilot Sport 4's - as currently not overly impressed - but that could be due to tyre pressure.

And hoping my understrear issues will be eliminated - with the added coilovers.

On-topic.....

All turbo cars are very tunerable with only spending an few extra ££££ - including 4 potts

Been looking at upgrading from my 28i to an 35is - but they still holding values well - and currently not much support from BMW either

Would very much like to map my 35i. Seems a bewildering choice of ways to do this. Will need to read up on various forums etc. Some cheap (and nasty?) Plug ins on E bay, other plug ins seem specifically developed (and specifically expensive) DTUK do one for £490. Know people who've used them for diesel remapping with good results.

Or do I find a good garage to do a remap? Not techs enough to do it myself.

Wow you have loads of options.

I had an E92 335i - so same engine.

Rolling road tune - is very good as the tune is tweeked to your car and preference - but do a lot of research on who you use.
Cobb - very flexiable and you can default to stock - get great reviews
JB4 - very flexible and you can start and lots of additional features
Racechips - stage 1 - but they offer engine warranty

Below is an comparison sheet I have lifted from another forum

That chart is so outdated it's useless.

COBB and Procede are fossils and the JB4 is quickly following them!

Riverside Racing are in Liverpool and seem to have plenty of positive reviews. They include a before and after dyno run and use their own software. 360_370 bhp and 480+ nms :o

Will have a look at their set up and see what they say.
