Relocating the Roof Motor

I just received my new motor and really not looking forward to take off the roof again, so I want to relocate it to the boot.

I have seen few posts about it and I know that the cables are long enough.

My problem is that I cannot work out on how to get the cable into the boot!!! there are no clear pictures and was wondering if I need to anything or is there is a hidden passage or If I missed any posts ?!?!

I am sure someone in here had his motor relocated?!!!
 
Hi Ben, just pm'd you back. There are instructions and photos on the forum somewhere - Cherrym had a copy - I'll ask him where he got them from.
 
If you do get it done Ben, hope to see some pictures since I am poised to carry out this job once I overcome my inertia on tackling such a huge job :D

Still I think this is one of those mods that should be carried out unless the Z is a garage queen and always parked under shelter.

I will keep you updated, I have got the motor off now and I am tempted to do it without removing the roof.

Didn't have a proper look yet but if I can removed the bracket without removing the roof then I think it can be done, I am just a bit worried about the hydraulic cables when the roof is open !!! I do need to have a proper look when I get the chance as I am in no hurry with this weather !! :)
 
I am also hoping to do it without taking off the roof since I have never done that before although there are guides here and on other forums. That is my last resort though.

I have seen where the motor sits after removing the rear compartment shelf but have no idea if like you said, the hydraulic and electrical cables are long enough and how I am supposed to contort myself to work within that cramp space :-D

No rush of course on your end. Will appreciate if you do get it done before me since I have other issues to work on for the time being (procrastinating :-P)
 
I had the same question Ben, but eventually made an executive decision...

I drilled a 20mm hole high in the side of the tray, then cut a slot down to it. Once the Hydraulic lines are passed through you can seal it up with silicon, but this allows the parcel shelf brackes to go back on and the lines come out nicely underneath into the boot.
 
mate talk to bowser134 on here, he is in Farnborough area on the M3, he sorted my last weekend.
 
Haven't done the work yet, I got the motor off and bought a new one. I will do the job without removing the roof!!!

I got some pics of removing the motor and I will post all pics once the job is completed.
 
Awesome! Look forward to seeing this. I was hoping to do this myself without removing the roof but if it's almost impossible then I'll just get it relocated by someone if I get the time to.
 
UPDATE: After reading many stories that 97% of motors can be revived and persisted with the drying process for few days, my motor started working again :D :thumbsup:

DON'T GIVE UP HOPE TOO SOON GUYS !!!
 
Hi all again, been away for a while. There is no need to make any alterations as the lines and cables are long enough to comfortably accommodate the motor in the side well under the parcel shelf bracket.

The lines comfortably slot behind the bracket when putting bracket back in. This also helps to hold the motor in situ.

Good news Ben. Even if it packs in again, its an easy job to change once you've relocated it :thumbsup:
