reducyion of speed limits

in cornwall this year i see the speed limis that have been in place for forty years are suddenly with no consultation being lowered sometimes for the better but in many places with from what i can see , no reason other than so they can raise revenue from unwitting motorists caught for exceeding these new limits. what happen to the government ending the war on the motorist. also look out on dual carriageways for painted square blocks or diamond shapes as these are used by traffic cars parked on bridges to measure your speed over distance and you are nicked. seems to be a new war on the motorist with middle lane persecution headlines lately too. 50 mph hoggers are annoying but most often they are older drivers who are not at ease on mways and are just driving where they think is safest with most room, most of us know this and just use the fast lane to overtake them, . i drive a 3.5 ton van and quite often sit in the mid lane at speed limit because a, I am constantly overtaking slower vehicles in the inside lane or i stay there on some stretches because the inside lane is not fit for purpose due to the sunken tramlines in the worn out surface, these dont affect trucks as they fit in them, cars are narrow enough to drive between them but a 3.5 t van is a bit wider and i find that the van gets in them and oscillates l to r within them like the pendulum of a clock. also i would question the practice of pulling motorists over on the hard shoulder to book or warn them about middle lane etiquete as highly dangerous in itself. surely commom sense should prevail. :driving:

Its happening in Wales too near where I live some 30s have become 20s and a lot of 60s turned into 40s.

Yep, main road into Lincoln was reduced to 50 throughout as a safety measure...didn't see any notification of it happening though.

Tapatalking...

The road from my village into Chester used to have only 3 changes in speed limit during its 6 mile route, 30 to 60 to 30 again. Now the tax collectors have had some input there are at least 12. as I can remember... 30, 60, 30, 60, 30, 40, 50, 40 , 50, 60, 30, 20, 30. The shortest is about 100 yards! What's the point!

The white squares on the road are not for timing speed......

To prevent boredom causing accidents on our highways the DVLA have implemented a new road safety program. The premise behind the scheme is to replicate the game of Pacman. Each month every car driver must drive over as many of the white squares as possible as quickly as possible. However, all drivers must beware of the white ghosts with blue eyes. If one of these is observed during the journey then each driver must shut their eyes (and therefore not be able to continue counting the white squares) until a passenger informs them that the ghost is no longer visible. At the end of each month every driver is asked to submit their time & score to: Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency, Swansea, SA99 1BA. The person with the highest score and lowest time can win anything from a set of silver bracelets up to a permanent holiday at selected locations at HM's pleasure. Get Pac-ing!

Roads with lower speed limits don't have to be maintained to such a high standard.
So maybe a cost cutting incentive too.

The A339 between Alton and Basingstoke mysteriously became a mixture of 40 & 50, almost overnight recently.

There seems no rhyme or reason to it.

This is a freight artery, so loads of HGVs on it. Both overtaking spots, at least half a mile each, are now 50. This doesn't allow people to overtake safely on these stretches (not enough relative speed), and instead lots of people are trying to "squeeze" past at the last minute, or overtaking in downright dumb places.

Surely this is counterproductive?

Oh noes that Basingstoke - Alton road was a great little run! When did this happen? Was only on it the other day stopping at the Departure Lounge for a nice bite to eat!
I know a lot of bikers use that road who always seem to flaunt the double white lines so doubt that's helped matters, along with regular accidents on it as well, great shame :(

Must have been the first week in May, I think.

Was a great road, and no real call to exceed 60 as fun enough.

Yup. I know the majority of Bikers are a decent bunch, but that road, and the A272, does seem to attract more than it's share of ... what's the word I'm looking for... oh, yes.... nobbers!

If you know the road, you'll understand my frustration!

I have also noticed the removal of cats eyes on some roads and just filled in. No top dressing of chippings going on, thats a bonus. So why?
The speed changes in Truro are sneaky also at Highertown / Treliske, little signs you dont notice not proper big ones so that you can ajust your speed.

Not noticed many changes in speed limits up here. However, there does seem to be a massive speeding crack down going on. Traffic Police, vans and men with hairdryers hiding in bushes everywhere you look at the moment. God forbid they should put such efforts into catching actual criminals and maybe solving some crimes.

Might it be revenue raising to fill a hole left by government budget cut backs? I've never had any beef with the Police but I've really started to dislike them due to the apparent victimisation of the common motorist recently.

Most bobbies on the ground I'm sure would rather be out catching the real nasty criminals or dealing with more significant crime, however as with most organisations these days there are targets or quotas to achieve for certain convictions, motoring ones being one of them, set out by the top bods. If the guys on the ground aren't meeting these quotas they can expect a significant rollicking, rubbish situation all round really.

On the other hand there are some terrible drivers out there so a reasonable police presence on the roads is needed to keep these from harming themselves and more importantly others!

right, heres one for you, back today from my cwll to london run, first one since the publicity over clamping down on middle lane hoggers, i noticed a definate increase in people getting back into the inside lane, good i hear you say ? ....NO !!! I am convinced after today that the m 4 was a more dangerous place today than before they announced this, there were cars switching lanes loads more than was safe or necessary, the most anoying thing is people is people overtaking you but then cutting across infront of you to get to the inside lane and i am talking 2 car lengths or less in front of you. i saw one twat in an rx8, ( well youd have to be a twat to drive one of them ) switch in and out of all 3 lanes including an undertake, four times in about half a mile, absolutetly rediculous, who thinks up these things, when the mway is busy it is a recipe for chaos. :headbang:

Your damned if you do and damned if you don't, everyone moans about middle lane hoggers then a law comes through (as more of a deterrent to be honest than actually catching people at it) to try and kerb this practice then people moan that its more dangerous. At the end of the day if everyone thought about what they're doing when they're driving and actually concentrating on every journey rather than switching off and going on autopilot then it would be a whole lot better for everyone. All you can do is drive defensively yourself and realise other drivers around you may not be as capable/confident as you behind the wheel or not concentrating on what they're doing and stay back and give them space. There's always gonna be the fools though who are just anti social drivers for the sake of it.
If the RX8 guy was driving like a douche you just have to let him get on with it and hope he'll be caught out at some point by the BIB. For what it's worth I actually thought it was better on the trip I made from Reading
to Bath on the M4 the other day although it wasn't rush hour or anything granted.
BTW, what's with the RX8 hating? Pretty capable cars from what I remember of my friends one ;)

nothing really re the rx8, used to have an mx5 , great little car, just that this bloke was being a total wankel ! ... btw, its the hondas i really hate
