Redex

Has anyone used Redex injector cleaner in their cars? Tesco have got a special offer £2 for a bottle instead of £4. Was thinking of trying it but wanted to hear others views first.

Mixed reviews on the stuff.

Read on an hyper-milling forum that acetone (pure) does a similar thing...but wasn't so widely accepted by all given the potential corrosiveness on the rubber hoses.

I've used redex a couple of times... No perceived harm/ benefits!

I use normal unleaded I tried Vpower and other higher octane but didn't really notice much difference.
If it's petrol from any of the major brands and busy stations then you'll be fine as most have cleaning agents in them.

Petrol from the bottom of a tank, of a single pump garage in the middle of nowhere will likely be old(er), dirty(er) than something from even a supermarket (and there's nothing wrong with supermarket fuel either).

Also, if you're not experiencing any specific problem then what are you trying to fix :poke:

I don't have a problem but I do a lot of short trips, was thinking of putting Redex in the tank and going for a long motorway blast to see if it made a difference.

Honest question - What do you expect to happen?

Plus, if you are really just wanting to test the redex... shouldn't you put it in and do your normal short journeys?

Or leave it out, and go for a long blast on the motorway... ;)

Redex is a waste of money IMHO. It may be cheap but never seen any difference when I've used it. If you want to clean carbon deposits etc. then use BG44K in a full tank of fuel. A dose is approaching £20 obtainable from Power Enhancers.

Isn't that just swapping one snake oil brand for another :poke:

You shouldn't need to clean carbon deposits if the car is used normally on decent fuel - they all have varying amounts of cleaning/decoking/lubrication additives in them anyway!

But if it makes you feel better to add £20 worth of 'wonder cleaner' into your tank then fine :headbang:

snake oil :D

great phrase, redex has been around for years and years, It dosent seem to break anything ....

As someone who has just parted with over £100 to get their engine terra-cleaned, do some research like I did.
I told my learned friend that I was about to get this done and he said " Don't waste your money, use Redex if you must clean it".
Not wanting to chuck money away I Googled it and found out that Redex can potentially harm other component parts when de-carbonizing the engine, whereas this Terra-clean stuff uses a much more refined version of petroleum for about 30-40mins and prevents big pieces of carbon doing any damage. That's my understanding of it. With over 90,000 mls I thought it was worth doing. She seems more responsive and I'm getting about 38-40 mpg. Even the mechanic where I took her to wasn't sure how and even if it worked.

before mpg??
you sure its not placebo?
theres a thread somewhere showing how the carbon build up was exactly the same before and after the terraclean process

what about using an oil flush?

would it be said that that product isn't al that great either or does that bring some benefit?

Yes, possibly placebo, as I didn't do an mpg calculation before.
On the subject. How have others worked theirs out? I'm doing mine by working out £60.00 gets me 400 miles. 360 is when the fuel light comes on and that gets me to the last increment on the fuel gauge. So assuming I get 40 more miles from then! :scratchhead:

A guy who the GF works with uses it every 10k mile and suggested it to her when her 500 wasn't running as it should so iput some in and it is running fine now so not sure if it was down to the Redex or the good long run as it only does very short trips to work and back which is only four mile :?

But I wouldn't put it in the Zed as it gets regular blasts

Two sided story http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/33200/fuel-additives-are-waste-money
But on our Golf Tdi soon after purchase i realised if you gassed it hard around 60mph it would occasionally go into limp mode , After a chat with my VW guru he said that carbon build up would be responsible & that first fix would be to add some Forte or Millers diesel additive .
So i added http://www.amazon.co.uk/Forte-Lubricants-Advanced-Formula-Treatment/dp/B0035PUUES/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1366994624&sr=8-14&keywords=diesel+additive as instructions & after running it through (which took us 4 weeks ) i couldn't get the car to go in limpmode even when i tried hard .
So some do work
