Red oil light

I hope this is just a top up issue.

I just got home from work (4 mile drive) and turned ignition off and was greeted with a BEEP sound and a RED oil light showing.
I turned ignition back on and let engine run for a couple of minutes then turned off again, everything fine this time.

I had NO oil warning light while driving home.

I checked the dipstick and the level didnt seem too bad but have topped up with 1/2 litre of oil.

I hope it was just a one off.

Sounds normal to me and has happened to me on several BMs - the oil light sytem is not exactly accurate and only an indication of possible low oil. Just keep oli levels to the appropriate level and all should be OK.

Well
Just been for a drive and stopped a couple of times and turned ignition off and all seems fine.

Sounds like an issue with the sensor or wiring.

From the Z4 Manual:

The indicator lamp lights up in yellow while driving:
The oil level is at the absolute minimum; refill as soon as possible. Do not drive more than 30 miles/50 km before refilling.

The indicator lamp lights up in yellow after the engine has been switched off:
