The local traffic cams here have been malfunctioning, so the police are spending a lot of time and money analysing each image. Great job. So why are there more rear end collisions?
Driver is going too fast even when light is yellow or is not paying attention and locks up brakes to not get a ticket. Driver following is not allowing a safe following distance and/or not paying attention and hits the other driver who wasn't paying attention. I see people running red lights every day. They're the ones that hit the gas to make the yellow light and end up blowing through an intersection at speedlimit +20 or more when the light has turned red. In fact, you can tell when the light is going to turn green by watching for that last high speed car, I see this constantly.
These cameras aren't the problem, it's the s**t drivers that is the problem. The cameras are just a poor reaction to the problem. Yesterday, some fat broad in a Ford Excursion was yakking on her cell and blew a light and almost nailed three high school students walking to school. Granted the kids weren't paying attention, but they did have the light and were in the crosswalk. This goes along with my "Don't treat the streets like a race course" rant. Learn to drive and pay attention, the life you save might be mine.
