This message is aimed mainly at UK readers (postage costs): I am seeking a pristine rear brake light because mine is slightly cracked.

Tim,you might be able to get that fixed for free at the dealer...there was a tech bulletin on that...mine had cracked on the right hand side I have a 2003,dealer fixed it for free. check this out

The dealer inspected it and concluded, sadly, that it was not caused by a model defect (seemingly the location of the crack is key!); so I don't wish to have to pay well over £80GBP. Thanks for the advice though.

my next suggestion is my standard reply to dealers that react in that fashion. what you have to do now is to burn that dealership to the ground,Kill everyone that is running out of the burning building, and salt the earth for 20 miles around that dealership. Then go to another dealership and you might find that they will treat you with a little more respect  This type of action (although drastic ) helps eliminate the bad dealerships, leaving only the GOOD dealerships in business and gives BMW a better satisfaction Rating :driving:

What's with the £80? I replaced my wife's unit with a BMW clear unit, which I think looks a lot better and it 'only' cost £45. I did have to fit it, but that takes much less than 30 minutes.

I sold the red unit on ebay and got £10 for it.

Hi Nick, I imagine the £80 is for supply & fitting. As you say, I hope to buy one on Ebay and fit it myself at a fraction of the cost.

Agreed.

Stern... but fair.
