Recommend me a SatNav

Looking for a portable nav.

Needs to have:
- free traffic updates (non-phone connection dependent)
- lifetime maps
- Multiple waypoint route planning (easy method, not some convoluted 3 x additional peices of software method)
- Under £150

Don't want a Garmin as I had a top of the range one of those and its hyper fragile. Also not good for waypoints and route sharing.
 
I use the phone apps mostly, TomTom Go Mobile mostly. not much use for waypoint planning though :(

maps.me shows promise on that front though - reads google maps format files, not the best solution for following a route though.

Not bought a dedicated device for years - still using the TomTom ONE v1 for routes when required, but the map is getting older...

not sure that helped much :D
 
I have a TomTom and a top-of-the-range Garmin. Both are cr*p really so would not recommend either. I never understand the routing the things want to do, especially the Garmin has a mind of its own.
 
NavMii is a free android app (perhaps iPhone too, but don't have one so I can't say). I've used it a few times in France, Spain and the UK and it performed very well. I used it on both my Nexus 7 tablet & Nexus 5 phone. That said, i've never used a Garmin or TomTom device so I can't compare. All I know is, I didn't get lost or end up in a lake :)

Edit: I should mention the maps are downloaded after you install, so there's no issue with loss of data connection for re-routing etc, like there is with Google Maps Navigation etc.

I use TomTom Go on Android. Costs about £15 per year and includes Traffic and Safety Cameras. Also FOC Maps for other countries. Handy when I went to Floirda last month.

You can also add points on a route if wanted using simple drag and drop. I've added 4 via's without issue.
 
With Garmin you can do good route planning but you do need to download additional software for your pc to do this so it doesn't really meet your criteria.
 
PM .. Tomscott he had a good one that we took round Europe I think it was Garmin ... Acted as the reference when Porsche OEM systems would not agree.
 
Thanks all. Really don't want another Garmin as it was so convoluted with waypoints and planning, I nearly threw it out the window on more than one occasion (and mine was top of the range). Also never worked with road trip map sharing created by hoon planners.

Also don't want to use a phone as it will predominantly be used by Mrs Inkey$ who wants a dedicated nav unit.

So that leaves TomTom if you ignore the market third tier players out there. Been looking at the the model 50. Needs a phone connection for live traffic but otherwise looks okay.

Does TomTom do the free map updates then? I still get the emails about x% off for my TomTom, still expensive though.

With android yes, and any other maps they do. But there is the £15 a year subscription fee. Still cheaper than the £18 they used to charge just for traffic though.

The GO range of units also do lifetime free map updates.
 
I'm looking to upgrade my ageing TomTom One V3 from circa 2007, I prefer TomTom but most of the newer/better models dont support the addition of custom POI's which for me is a must-have.

ye for this cost of a new tomtom with free life time upgrades its not worth updating an old tomtom
