Recomendations replacing Run Flats with Standard Tyres

Hi all,

So looks like that time has come when 3 of my tyres need replacing, so looking at what people have said and my local BMW specialist has recommended I am going to switch from RFT to standards, therefore can anyone recommend :

- best tyres for me, local town use
- what kit i would need if I get a puncture?

Thanks for your help,

Simon

Can't help with an answer, I only got my car a few days ago, but I'm very interested in the answers from others ... are you planning to use the same wheels? Or take the opportunity for an upgrade?

running Continental sport contact 2 bmw approved medium compound runflats 17 inch.

Very usable,tram-lining greatly reduced and skipping when hitting bumps on bends also improved.

I replaced with non run flat Michelin PSS. Stunning tyres, massive improvement.

I have the same tyres just fitted and they are brilliant.

The biggest difference is the lack of road noise and the increase in comfort.

The grip and general handling is also greatly improved.

My car is producing just over 400bhp and I'm not losing traction on the rear at all while moving. The launch control is pretty savage now where previously it would just spin.

Can you use the same rims (assuming you want to)? Or do you need different ones for non-RFT?

Just to broaden your knowledge a little any wheel can run withrunflat or non runflat tyres fitted however a runflat tyre will only function correctly if fitted to a wheel that is made for use of runflat tyre
put simply a runflat alloy has a 2nd lip on the inside of the wheel which once pressure is lost the rimbead of the runflat tyre sits on  hope that helps

Ahah, thanks. So RFTs need special rims to work properly but non-RFTs will fit and work properly on rims designed for RFTs. Means I could simply keep my 17's, get 4 new tyres and figure out a puncture repair strategy...

i've just changed from RFTs to Michelin PSS.

I don't notice a difference in ride comfort. i have standard, i.e. not msport or adaptive, suspension.

That's a shame, I was looking to change to non run flats simply because of the shocking ride provided by run flats on 19 inch rims.

one noticeable difference is that I cut a low curb on a mini roundabout on the same stretch of road. On the RFTs it felt painful (really jarring), whilst the new tyres take this slight rise much better.

Hi, what rim diameter are you using?

Based on previous suggestions I fitted Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta non runflats on my reconditioned 18" MV2 rims. Didn't cost the earth and I am more than happy with them. No more tramlining and despite going from 16" to 18" rims better ride quality :D

This might sound like a silly question but can you replace just a pair at a time? Only asking as my fronts will need replacing soon but the rears have about 5/6mm left on them. I'd like to get rid of the run flats but don't want to waste good tread on the rears.

What do people think of the pirelli's or toyo's?
