Hey everyone - I wanted to share with the group an upgrade I recently made to my e85. For the record Im in Canada, and have a 2003 e85 in Sterling Grey (472) with a 3.0i M54 engine.
The modification I made was to add a rear windscreen. I did a significant amount of research and finally landed on a solid, clear plexiglass screen. I looked at the OEM mesh screen offered by BMW but was 1) shocked at the price and 2) was concerned about decreased visibility. I was able to connect with a fellow enthusiast zed4me (https://www.youtube.com/@zed4me) on-line. Isaac has access to a 3D printer and has designed (and tested) windscreen mounts specifically for the e85 Z4. The mounts are black in color and are easily attached to the roll over bars and rear deck (see pics).
Isaac charged me $50USD + shipping for the mounts. Amazon supplied the 1/4" plexiglass in 12X24 size for $45 CND and an Etsy supplier printed me the logo (bottom right corner of windscreen) for $12 CND. One morning in the garage with basic tools and it was install - with total cost around $125 CND (about $100 USD or $78 GBP).
I may be biased but I think the addition looks great! I wanted a subtle OEM look and I think the unobtrusive logo, coupled with the low profile mounts provided by Issac, really gives me that feeling. Only thing I find is that the glass does show off dust if I don't keep things clean. I can tell you that the screen is solid, with minimal rattle/movement when travelling top-down at highway speeds. I may add some adhesive-backed moleskin material under each mount location to see if that improves the (minimal) movement Im experiencing at highway speed.
One final bonus.... the logo in the bottom right - it is very subtle, which is what I wanted. A bonus comes when I look in the rear view mirror as I can read "The Ultimate Driving Machine" whenever I check out the rear view! That makes me smile ever time!!
