Rear Trailing Arm Bushing Help

Hi all, picked up a 2004 E85 a week ago and now wrenching on this new project of mine.
I have experience wrenching on a E46 so I guess most things will translate over, hello to everyone here and I hope my stay here is welcome.

I am now tackling the infamous clunk aka RTAB bushings that seem visually okay.

I've now put the project on hold as to do a bit more research but then I stumbled on this issue when trying to remove the bushings;
Does anyone have a hack for the trailing arm to go lower?

On my E46 3.0 it would just drop nearly all the way down allowing for my bushing removal tool to work without restriction but with the z4 it seems that it hangs higher.
I've undone all the cables so it's just the axle and supporting arms that are in the way at the moment but it won't go down any further.
Positioning the spindle outwards won't work as inside there's the gas tank that I risk rupturing if I give it too much stress.

This is the tool that I'm currently using and the m10-m14 spindle is around 70cm long.

Some other people seem to have had success with a smaller bushing removal tool, maybe I should cut the pulling spindle in half...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try unbolting the bottom shock bolt and the hub/arms should hang lower to give you the room you need. One bit of advise I would give is to tape up the side skirt with masking tape. Just incase you slip with any tools it will stop you from chipping the paint on the skirt.

Hey Tony,

You can use something to jam the arm against the bodywork so that it hangs lower.

I did a write up here and you'll see what I mean, stage 17:

Any questions feel free to message :)
