took the wheels off yesterday to give them a good clean, and when I took the rears off I noticed the rear spring on the passenger side had snapped at the bottom, about an inch up. bummer so today I had 2 new springs fitted..
this car is a money pit...but i love it

Sorry to hear that OP. :(

I hadn't realised it is still an issue with E89s - you'd think they may have got it sorted by then. :headbang:

That is so sad and they always seem to break in the same spot... :(

FWIW OP you may want to contribute to this thread:-

Having had to rotate a spring to stop a knocking noise, I can now see they are rubbish designed springs.
They use a barrel spring where the cars load bares down on a very small diameter with a pinching action, bit like compressing a small spring between your finger and it deflects sideways and pings out. It puts the load on the edge of the spring diameter and overloads it.
I bet very few front springs have broken, if any.

Had both of mine replaced as well couple of weeks ago, same thing. I did hear a knocking noise from mine when unloading the wheel.

With you on the money pit side, this month
Four new tires, two new springs, pads all round and front disks! With you on the love it side though

Today I liffted my car just to check everything and guess what ... broken rear driver side spring as well :)

So what spring do I need to buy ?

You mentioning here guys that you have same problem. What spring do I need then?
Do I need pair or just one?
I am unable to get part number from 'real oem'
Mechanic mentioned Sachs might do it

Car is Bmw z4 35i DCT 18 inch wheels. Adaptive suspensions.

just popped back to this thread... blimey I never realised this was such an issue.
I have a mate who is the manager at a Halfords Auto centre so i took it there as i wanted them replaced as soon as possible.
No idea what make they put on. But judging by the thread above it wont be long until they will need replacing again any way

That is bad timing OP. :(

But looking on the bright side, you won't be doing any tyres, springs or brakes again for some time - now you have got loads of time for love! :driving:

I have seen Sachs list the springs with pics on the internet.

Well how about link for that ;).

https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/autoparts-manufacturer/sachs/coil-springs/10213/bmw-z4-e89

That took about 10 seconds to find on Google.
Having checked that site they do not list a Sachs brand rear coil but I have seen them there before and elsewhere.
A decent spring compressor you just might be able to remove the spring without dropping the shocker off.
