Rear proximity sensors

My new Toy has rear proximity sensors on the bumper, of course they don't work properly, but is this a BMW thing or is it after market?

Factory option, but they do suffer , you may have a bad sensor giving a false tone
You sir are spot on! It makes a constant noise the moment I put it into reverse :x

assuming they are the same ones as E46, I fitted some to my E46 that were for a Landrover, same part ⅓ the price!

You want this.

Other colours available

You can find the faulty one by getting someone you trust to put the car in reverse. Put your ear to each sensor. Working ones make a very faint ticking sound.

Ignition on, select reverse, stand to the side of the boot and gently touch the sensors. If you feel and hear a slight ticking they are working. It could be the control unit located behind the boot carpet behind the courtesy light on the off-site. I've unplugged mine for 30 mins then reconnected and its been fine for a while. Mine is playing up again so I suspect my control unit is dodgy

Interesting; my sensors are playing up (not all the time, probably 75% of the time) but when I did the checks mentioned above, all of them seemed to be working fine/ticking/vibrating. Might have to check out the control module.

Try plenty of water and a fine brush also. I have seen mine being stuck on with fine peices of muck getting stuck in the crevasses around the sensor. Not sure why but it has happened on all my cars over the years.

If one sensor is completely duff then none will switch on or tick, your best option is to scan the car with Ista, dis or inpatient and it will tell you which ones at fault. May even be more than one.

I've just sorted mine out and had two faulty ones, you need to make sure you buy one with the right part number and go for a genuine one. I tried two different brand new aftermarket ones and whilst they seemed to be ticking and stopped the solid tone when going into reverse they don't actually work and confuse the module.

Ended up buying a second hand one from a breaker and it worked straight away.

But then again, they may be retrofit. Have you looked on VINchecker? Post a photo, would help confirm if aftermarket.
