Rear parcel shelf

Hi, what is the purpose of the sprung"flaps" on the outer edges of the rear parcel shelf?
I've just replaced the rear dampers on my 03 Z4 3.0ltr and replaced the parcel shelf and noticed that the flaps are permanently in the up position. Is this normal?
Everything seem to be working correctly, shelf up and down, roof open close, and cut out switch when the shelf is in the up position.
I suspect they may be to support the roof when it's in the down position,just never noticed them before.
Your expertise will be appreciated!

Simples - to create more boot space when the roof is closed you can turn them to raise the shelf. If you want to open the roof they need to be lowered to give space for the roof to fold. Interlock switch prevents errors.

You comments lead me to believe you may have the roof down with the tray raised which should not be possible

I'm sure most people leave them in the down position all the time.
 
the flaps on the sides move when you turn the raise/lower the parcel shelf.. they're part of that mechanism are they not?

I've actually currently got mine out, so could probably go have a look if my thinking is incorrect :)

I understand the purpose of the shelf positions, my question is only concerned with the flaps. Since refitting the shelf the end flaps remain in the up position ie at 90 deg to the shelf, is this normal? Never noticed them before, I suppose they would stop any small item placed on the shelf from sliding off, when the shelf is raised. Not that I know anyone who has ever put anything on the shelf! They would also be lowered as the roof was stowed. Dell.

OK - now understood. Well mine remain upright all the time (shelf up or down), so my best guess is they are designed to stop anything sliding off the shelf that could potentially jam the roof or damage the fabric if lowered, but presumably they themselves flex out of the way under the pressure of the canvas as it folds down.

Probably the least used parcel shelf of any car made..
 
Thanks for your Imput. I have also had the opportunity to look at another Z and they are "up" seems this is correct. I just thought I may have reassembled it wrong.
