Rear Mirrors dipping in reverse

Silly noob question, haven't got access to the car's manual as I am away and just curious if this is an easy fix.

Is having the rear mirror dip when reverse is engaged a user programable setting? My '10 35i did this good as gold up until last week but as soon as I programmed the memory seats it has lost the function. Have I overriden a factory setting?

I have a basic OBD with program function, am I going to have to go in to this to change it?

I am using the same key

Thanks
Ben

If the mirror switch is turned onto the NS mirror then it won't operate, you have to turn the switch to the drivers side mirror for the mirror to dip.

Can I tag a question onto this?

When the switch is to the drivers side, if I drop the driver mirror while parking (and I think I have to have reverse engaged for this to work) it will automatically return to it's original position only after I remove the key. Is there a way to get it to return to its position after I come out of reverse?

I don't quite know the exact sequence of events that allows this to happen so occasionally I must do something different and it stays dropped, which is quite annoying.

THIS is most likely it - will check and report back when I go to the car this evening. I was adjusting the mirrors and most likely left the switch on the NS.

Thanks

you might have a fault, mine returns back to the original position once I come out of reverse.

Is yours manual or auto? Mine is auto btw.

If a fault why does it go back when I pop the key, surely it just wouldn't work at all?

Only the passenger side auto dips in reverse, not the drivers side.

When this happens, is it after you've just reversed into a parking space?

As it's an auto, presumably you then select neutral, 'park' or just switch off the engine (on our auto, switching off puts the box in 'park')?

Perhaps the position only resets when you have either a forward gear selected or when it goes into park?

Mine is a manual. As soon as I pop out of reverse the mirror returns back to its original place. Sorry not sure about the auto and if it works in a different way

I know.

To add to the other comments the driver side mirror only returns to normal if I pop the key after selecting park just after reverse. I think if if I select drive in between it doesn't. I also have to drop the mirror with reverse selected in the first place. Sometimes I back into a space and then move forward slightly. I will have play around more and find what works and doesn't. I definitely have to pop the key for the mirror to return. Even turning the engine off doesn't do it.

I've an auto and mines returns back to 'normal' when it is out of reverse. Currently I had to reverse out of where I park and then straight into drive and no issue for me, it returns to 'normal'.

Also it's only the near side or passenger mirror this happens with, not the offside or driver mirror. The comments seem to suggest the issue here is with drivers side and if it does return but only when the ignition is off then this may have something to do with your key memory setting. The keys also hold memory so if two drivers use two different keys it has their own settings.

Thanks for the tip ...
I just went out into the garage and shifted the mirror switch to the driver's side.

Cheers

Sorry, I'm confused. So you know that the auto dip only works on the passenger side mirror. Yet you're asking how to get it working on the drivers side mirror? As for the mirror resetting when the key comes out, that's because the car stores mirror and electric seat settings dependent on the key. Two keys = two different mirror and seat (and also iDrive actually) settings profiles.

If I've got the wrong end of the stick here, please clarify the original question because I might have missed the point! :)

No problem. I was just wondering why when I manually lower the driver side mirror (I know it won't do so automatically) while reverse parking, sometimes it will go back to it's original place and other times it won't. I didn't understand the exact sequence of event that caused it to return. I only use 1 key with my car so it's not a key setting thing.

This morning it worked fine again. I think as long as I lower the mirror while I am in reverse gear it will work out whether this is to reverse park and reset it for me afterwards. I can even move forward while doing this and it still works. If just lower the mirror while driving along, or deviate from a certain sequence of events while reverse parking it will stay lowered. The mirror only returns to normal when I pop the key so if say I reverse park and stay in the car with the key still in it will stay down.

It just annoys me sometimes as with it being a bit hit and miss but I think I have a reasonable handle on how to get it to work, I just I wish I could modify it so it returns when you switch the engine off.
