rear left 'rattle' over bumps

can i tap into the collective brains for some advice?!

left rear, i'm getting a rattling on both the up & down stroke of the suspension but not over larger bumps (so it seems)
i only hear it when the roof is down, the noise doesn't transmit to the cabin through the chassis
it sounds a little like a handful of washers on a pin rattling up and down - just an impression of the sound
and it is REALLY annoying!!

i have had the wheel off and checked the spring (albeit in the dark) and i don't think it's broken

can anyone pinpoint it for me, or give me some pointers?

I had a strange noise from the rear and was the spring, although the rascal wasn't 'that' visible . New springs and noise gone.

Check the rear silencer mounts, they can break and cause noise over bumps

I had that too. The silencer is stainless steel so needs a specialist welder.

You say it only happens with the roof down, well i had the exact same thing. I knew it wasn't the springs as they were replaced a short while ago and the "chinking" sound was there before & after. So, looking into this i eventually found the source.

If you look at the headline of the roof as it is opening, there is a rectangular trim in between the "claws." This joins the small bar that is situated on top of the middle consul to make sure the roof sits square & can't "wiggle" when fully open. Some folks have removed this for the same reason.

On later models this trim was removed. After time the plastic coating on the bar wears away leaving bare metal which makes the "chinking" sound when going over bumps with the roof down.

Hope this helps. Cheers, tug
