Rear ended today :(

Not in the zed, so you can all breathe again.

My son passed his driving test last week and today he drove himself to college for the first time. I was shotgun as he wanted someone with him on first drive to college.
He was giving way to a car on an island when someone ploughed into his rear end. Hasn't done too much damage to his car, the bumper on the other car was a write off.

Feel so sorry for him.

Oh no Carol! I hope it hasn't dented his confidence too much (no pun intended), that you're both okay and that he gets his car sorted with no No-Claims silliness on the part of the Insurance companies

Thanks. :)
He got back in and continued his journey which was good. He says it hasn't affected him driving so let's hope so.

I'm hoping we can just get a new number plate and not involve his insurance. It's dear enough as it is and it wasn't his fault at all so should be ok. The other car is going to need some serious bumper repairs so they will have to claim on their own insurance.

I've just been and took the spare wheel out of the boot and it's dented the boot a bit inwards but you wouldn't know from the outside. The wheel comes in and out ok tho.

Officially - does not matter for insurance purposes whether it is your fault or not, your premium will rocket if you inform them (again - officially at renewal time, they will ask whether you had had an accident, whether at fault or not and whether claimed for or not).

I can not stand the insurance companies and their ways to extract money from you, via dubious ways etc. I would be very careful in who you tell in case this goes around (like him posting on facebook or so).

Good point. Knowing him he's put it on already, you know what they're like. Lives played out on Facebook!

I'm not going to tell the insurance company. I'll wait for husband to have a look at it later but from what I can see it's just a little crease under the boot lock and the boot dent which, hopefully, can be tapped back out, numberplate light glass and the number plate is scratched.

If the other driver gives their insurance company our details as the person they hit, would their insurance company get in touch with ours?

Yep, they talk to each other. He was rear ended so categorically not his fault. Tell the insurance company. If they get an idea you're hiding something they could invalidate his policy then you're hosed for the longer term. Remember, if his policy goes up, it's a consequential loss and you should be able to recover that from the other driver. Your insurance company will tell you if it will affect his renewal, then you can make a decision on whether to add it to the claim.

Finally, if the bang has dented the shell, even if only the spare wheel well, get his car checked out properly

Consequential loss is not reclaimable from another party in this country. In other countries, yes, but not in the UK as it is not considered an actual loss.

Maybe not through insurance, but I successfully sued for additional losses caused as the result of another driver (holidays required when taking time off to organise things etc)

do the insurance companies ask if you have had an accident or do they ask if you have been involved in 1?

We've decided not to inform the insurance. We won't be putting in a claim as the damage is fixable. We are scared to death the insurance will go up, it's already just over 2k and it's not worth risking it going up more when it's bits and pieces we can fix ourselves even tho it wasn't his fault
Thanks guys

Sorry to hear this. I wrecked my first car at 17 and didn't tell the insurance company for exactly this reason. I paid for a recovery truck to take it to a local scrap yard and pretended it had never happened...

As an aside, Carol, did I spot you around junction 18 on the M6 yesterday afternoon? Can't be many Atacama Egg Yolk E89s in the Midlands. Looked pretty impressive in the metal
