Rear End Clunk

I have a 2005 2.5i that seems to have a intermittent single "clunk" sound coming from the back end of the car. The problem occurs after I put the car in reverse, back up for a little bit (like out of a parking spot), and then shift into first and get going. How hard I get going seems to have no effect on the noise. Nor does how hard I brake in reverse before shifting into first, it seems to just be a random occurence. A friend at work with an E36 M3 just had a shock tower rip through the sheet metal on one of his rear shocks, so I have gotten particuarly concerned about this problem. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the help,

-Kyle

Mine used to do this, I 99% think it's a clunk from the diff, and some people had a replacement fitted. If it's still under warranty let the dealer take a look at it.
