Rear brake pad removal?

I've just finished cleaning up the rear calipers on Z4-35i yesterday and was wondering how easy it is to remove the rear brake pads to do a cleaner job of painting the calipers? Having read around on some other places on the net, it appears you need a special diagnostic tool to tell the e-brake to stay unlocked. I've tried putting the car into neutral (DCT) and leaving the hand brake off and the key in the ignition, but the e-brake comes back on automatically after around 15mins. :scratchhead:

I know I could just tape up around the pads and the pad clips, but I would be able to make a better job of painting the calipers if I could temporarily remove the pads and pad clips.

I have had my rears changed by an Indy....but the brake warning light had to be reset by a dealer....

i was just speaking with a BMW tech the other day about this and he said that it was BMW's intention not to allow this tool to enter the after market. I retorted that this was probably against anti competition laws......

What would happen if you disconnected the battery?

From what I've read, if you disconnect or need to change the battery, then that also requires a special system reset procedure at an AMD or independent who has the right system tools.

I think I'll be just carefully taping up the calipers and painting around everything for now.

I love our E89, but I do reminisce for the days when cars were much easier to work on.

That's the way things are going - In years to come I reckon you'll need a special key to open the bonnet!

Another reason I was keen to stick with the E85, these cars are getting to complicated with all their electronic witchcraft.

I remember thinking how complicated my Saab Turbo was way back in the 80's _ It was iron age stuff by todays standards!

Haven't tried it yet but in few week time i am going to try and replace rear brake pads.
My plan, ebrake off, ign off, unplug from caliper, remove motor gearbox, screw back piston via what was the motor drive spindle , fit pads and reverse procedure.
Hopefully when ebrake reapplied it will find its new position as this seems to be implied in one of the docs published somewhere on this forum.

I'll be interested to understand how you get on. Is you E89 a manual, auto or DCT by the way?

Its 23i manual, just trying to get a clunking noise on drive shafts sorted first on warranty before i start messing with brakes!
