Rear brake disc replacement.

Hello from the new guy, have had my z4 28i for nearly a year and the rear discs and pads need replacing (wasnt bought new) bmw quoting £450 which seems a bit excessive. Looking online i can get brembo discs and ebc pads far cheaper than bmw want.

I guess two questions

Considering i have the standard bmw front pads and discs what are the best options for on the rear? Dont want to change fronts as they were newly installed as part of sale last year.

Im also hearing about an ebrake issue where only certain companies have the tools to release the brakes is this correct as i was planning on buying online and getting them installed at my local independent.

Thanks for taking the time to read and apologies for my first post being one asking for help not offering it.

Im uk based by the way if that changes anything.

Hi
My only advise would be make sure your Indy can reset the wear sensors after replacing your discs and pads. BMW quoted me the same so I visited a good Indy who saved me money but when finished could only reset the sensor to 10000 miles :o
So be careful.

For resetting the sensor, is there no way it can be done through the dash?
I was able to reset the minis this way following instructions found on the net.

Can be done through the dash, so long as you don't let it go to minus.
Look elsewhere here and on youtube, easy job.

Take motor gearbox off the back by removing two torx screws, then wind piston back with torx bit.
Will be doing this again in a few weeks to fit some vented discs rear.

The torx bit fits inside the centre with the c clip.
I find it easier to remove the caliper completely and easier to paint.

Is this idiot proof?
Is there only one way the motor goes back on?
We are at around 42,000 miles and still have original brakes on with plenty of life left in them.

I would say my front pads would have lasted 100k the rears lasted 50k.
But rear discs had quite a lip on the rim so got replaced.
Picture with motor gearbox attached.

Looks pretty simple, good for the future when I need to do it.
One last thing, how does the motor work the piston?
Does it have a bit sticking out that engages with the torx bit that you turn the piston back with?

Yes.

If while apart you paint the calipers, give them several coats, as the rears are steel and the rust tends to break through the paint.
