Rear Boot Spoiler for Roadster

This was covered in quite a large thread recently. Have a look in the general thread forum and you shoujd find it along with lots of pics.

General conscensus was to do without.

I quite like that spoiler.

Actually, if you put the clear rear brake light on from the M, from a distance it gives the appearance of a boot spoiler on the Roadster.

automotive acne

Have a search as DannyBoy suggests it's been covered a few times and as stated recently with photos of pretty much every style available

It will be hard to wash the areas between the spoiler and boot. As Breaker suggested, clear brake light from M Roadster will be better (probably cheaper too). How much is the clear brake light?

Go for the clear brake light, but please for the love of god forget the IMO hideous spoiler.

Clear brake light is better and cheaper option. :)

If you really want to ruin the looks, you could go for either the Hamann or AC Schnitzer one or two-piece spoilers...

i totally disagree - the oem bmw spoiler is great - i think the z4's rear would be lacking without it. its not too hard to clean between the gap, unless you have troll hands i suppose lol. id agree to get the clear lights, i have them and think it sets the car off well

Having read the book on the development of the Z4 it makes it clear that the bootlip was very cleverly designed as a spoiler in its own right. It provides just the down force required to perfectly balance the car. Not that anyone would notice but fitting it not only ruins the lines but worsens the performance. Not a top mod on that basis.

That said the beauty of customisation is for each to make their car how they want and in that case it's 'right'

fair enough, i just like that it follows the boot line, and doesnt look like a bolted on after thought, which all spoilers are pretty much unless its a high performance vehicle, which a roadster is not in my opinion due to the extra weight.

I think the BMW spoiler looks OK but it's personal taste in the end. I like the car without it.

klarky - each to their own. I make mods that some like others don't.

BTW what do you mean by 'unless its a high performance vehicle, which a roadster is not in my opinion due to the extra weight'?

How can a roadster with engines up to 3.2 litre not be a high performance and what extra weight? It's lighter than a coupe

sorry i wasnt very clear - was just a quick reply/me being a bit of a tard, i meant in general most cars dont need spoliers, as you rightly said most are designed with aerodynamics in mind and its only extremely quick cars that would actually benefit from a spolier, in most cases (including mine) its just extra weight your lugging around, and if anything a little more drag id imagine, its purely there for looks - at least its not like a bookshelf 2 foot tall bolted to the rear

my understanding of most roadsters (generalization alert! not specific to bmw) is they tend to be heavier due to needing to be more rigid as they have no roof, cant say i was aware of the coupes weight as i never even looked into one, always wanted the roadster, but im suprised its heavier - some engineering voodoo must be going on :D

as the coupe has a more pronounced boot lip i cant imagine a spoiler would look any good

Nope! It is just the fact that the roadster was designed first, then they decided to attach a solid roof. Hence the coupe is a little heavier.

I think the 2-piece spoiler looks quite nice. It extends the down-force from the middle to the sides. :)
