Real MPG for 20i & 28i

Hi All,

Yes im new here, so first off a big hello! (Pics on there way).

I have searched the forums, but cant find any hard facts.

So here is my question:

Im looking at buying either a sDrive 20i M Sport or the sDrive 28i M sport depending on budgets in 6 months time.

What I really want to know is how efficient are these engines? So can someone tell me who drives either of the two cars above, how much it costs on average to fill up from empty (and what price per litre), and how many miles they get out of a tank. The reason I ask is because I won’t be driving as if on a rolling road, ill be right foot heavy and enjoying my drive to work and back each day (some 60 miles per day).

Appreciate your time in reading this.

Many thanks

Although i dont own 1, official MPG figures say they are both the same. They both share the same engine, the 20i has a smaller turbo/runs at less boost and different mapping being the only difference

I think you arent going to get a straight answer on this. The engines are new and no one has been with the car for a year. The winter has an adverse effect on the Real MPG. In terms of filling up your car its 55 x Price = Cost however the reserve is 5 litres so the real cost will be be 50 x price = cost.

I have heard the average is around 34-35MPG in winter and you will probably get a few miles more in the summer months!

Thanks for the replies guys.

KeithJ wow didn’t realise the tank was so small.

Can you tell me how many miles you tend to get from a tank of fuel?

The reason i ask is i currently drive a BMW 318ci which costs me £80.00 to fill up and i get about 360-380 miles from a tank which is bad, im hoping even with a heavy right foot in the sDrive 20i ill get the same fuel economy overall, or perhaps better?

Thanks again.

Yowzer that's the kind of mileage I get from my 35i and I don't hang about either... (Though thats £60 to fill up and 280 miles, which in ratio terms is about the same).

Smaller tanks = less weight which means better fuel economy. You are buying a Z4 which is relatively a small car although big for a convertible.

You should look to the 400-500 mark for your tank range depending on your roads, hills, traffic lights, journey length.

Thanks for your replies guys.

Maniac: Yes unfortunately i don’t hang about, but in a 12 year old 318Ci it doesn’t go that great, had it for 5 years now, cant complain still a lovely car but with 165k on the clock :) Interesting to know its about the same as the 35i.

KeithJ: Yes very true which makes sense, so your saying even with a heavy right foot in the 20i i should get 400-500 miles per £60.00 fill up? If so that’s actually a saving on what i spend now!

Thanks again.

I cannot imagine there's going to be a significant difference between the two, I would say that if you can afford the 28i get that one, there will certainly be significantly less of them on the road and come resale time that maybe the difference.

That said however, with the deals on offer on the 20i at this moment in time, I wouldn't wait six months tbh

If I get 400+ per tank I will be happy. If its less than 400 miles per tank, I will be upset.

Richy - I think in your case you would be able to get at least the 400 miles as long as your not accelerating hard, up hill with the aircon! Haha!

20i and 28i have the same MPG as they are nearly the same engine apart from the injectors.

I only have 750kms in my 20i and only filled it up once (with Shell V power). According to my calcs the consumption was 7,8 l/100km which is 36,2 mpg. If I say that a tank is 50 litres then I can go 640 kms (398 miles) with it.
Although I have to say that the car is new and it was quite gentle driving (mostly countryside/some motorway/little city), but I couldn't stop myself from revving the engine at red lights (start-stop off :D ) to hear that lovely rumbling!!!

Thats actually alright for a new engine start up. Once the car gets broken in a little more then you can expect better performance and MPG or so I am led to believe!

Ahh excellent, thanks for your input guys, so def looks like id actually make a saving in fuel with this car, crazy!!

Thanks again!

Hmmm...

My 20 is still averaging piss poor mileage. Its down to 29 mpg on the last fillup. :o

Ok maybe its 20 miles down the m6 between Birmingham and Coventry thats the problem. Honestly that piece of motorway is horrible. It does make me wonder though.

Its the same old story, its how you drive and in what situation (traffic will always return crap mileage, some nice quiet runs will return much higher MPG).

As a for instance... I've had a 520D loaner recently, should return 43mpg around town according to BMW... I get 32mpg. My 35i returns 25mpg making the diesel look oddly crap at mileage, but its the same thing, lots of sitting in traffic etc, no way around it. Well there is, get a nissan leaf... only to sit in traffic a very long time when the battery goes flat lol.

Not a massive amount of help but I have the 3.0i which the 2.8i has just replaced. I have a fairly heavy right foot and can get 32 mpg out of the car wich with a 12 gallon tank that means 384 miles till its bone dry and spluttered to a stop. The 2.8i is better on fuel so you may well top 400 miles.
Also as you get the first couple of 1000 miles on the clock the engine beds in, frees off you get the full mpg as well as performance potential.

Done about 200 miles, mix of A, dual and a little town driving. Limited bursts so far as running in but am getting a very respectable 39+ mpg. Suspect this will keep rising as the engine loosens up, but then again will be past run in by then....

currently getting 29.1mpg according to obc

350miles driven

tank costs £65 to fill

Just a correction but the 28i isn't a 2.8 liter engine, it's a 2.0.

Back to the topic, I have about 800miles on mine and mainly driven around town/side street and averaging 25mpg. Not bad at all.
