Rattling noise OEM Z4M hardtop...

Anyone else has the issue with the hardtop making some internal noises when driving on bumpy roads? My hardtop started to make some irritating rattling noises this winter. Any idea on how to remove the roof lining of the hardtop and check out what is making the noise..?

Same problem here. I've tried two different tops, one is as quiet as you like, the other has numerous bangs and creaks.
Some success adjusting the fit via the adjustment available in the locating lugs, but this is a trial and error job, just make sure its not to low or it rubs on the body, or to high when it causes wind noise.
To remove the lining, it is a roof off job, on to its stand, and then you need a trim removal tool, to prise out the fastening clips. Do not use a
screwdriver to unscrew them as they don't!
Not tried this yet but these are the instructions given to me by a windscreen fitter.

We had this problem and its easier to sort than you think. You have to change the position of the hard top forward or backward.

If the noises are the same as mine it was the spigot on the hard top moving inside the receptacles on the windscreen.

I can't find a picture of the part on google at the moment but it is the metal plate that is the mounting for the rear spigots that have the adjustment collars. I moved mine forward about 1.5mm being careful to not adjust it sideways as the lateral fit was spot on.

Part 2 in this diagram shows the two holes in the spigot mounting plate that two bolts go through. I marked either side of the plate with a fine marker pen to ensure the plate remained in lateral alignment, this is because the hole on the plate allow quite a bit of movement around the bolts for adjustment. I used a steel rule to determine the distance and also a vernier caliper. It was still a case of adjust, refit the hard top and take it out for a 60mph test drive and adjust again untill it was correct.

Adjusting it too far forward created wind noise.

Just bear in mind that to move the hardtop forward on the car you have to move the plate rearwards.

Sorry if this is a bit disjointed, I wish I had took some photos!

Hope it helps!

The rattling noise is coming from inside the hardtop… My car was ordered and delivered with this hardtop. The BMW made dealer made it fit perfect when new. This is the first year the noise started to appear :x

Hi,

I picked up a used Hardtop this weekend in Germany.

On the drive home I noticed the creaking at the rear and a loud wind noise at the front...
Looking closely, I see a gap in the fornt corners where the top meets the top of the windscreen (about 1mm). Should that gap be there?
Should I use the instructions above to remove that gap?

Any advice would be most welcome!

My HT is silent. Took me like 3 days of trial and error to get it fitting perfectly. Pain in the ass.

Hey all

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I'm getting wind noise through the drivers side corner at high speed with the hard top on. Passenger side is fine. Soft top is fine.

Any ideas on how to adjust this - what are the locator lugs and how do they adjust? I presume I can setup the drivers side same as passenger side which should fix the problem.

Regards

Bill
