Hi guys, I am new to this forum. And Before posting this topic i read many others on my problem. And i want to upload video for my case to distinguish if my problem (rattling noise coming from the engine) is caused my failing DISA. It is a little bit hard to hear cuz the engine is noisy it is still cold in the morning, i will later post a newer video. But so far is it possible to say that the noise is caused by DISA? the sound comes from sound that area when i bring camera close to it it is possible to hear it. Very much THanks

Guys i disassembled my disa from the engine and i believe it is the problem. My car is 2003 BMW 2.5 and the disa i need on the realoem shows like 04/2004 11617502269 +core, ENDED , do u need to get this old part or i can get the one that came for z4's after 2004, and also where would u recommend buying it? thnx again

See this thread: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=12150

Since the older unit has been discontinued, I would get the updated one.

I buy a lot of my parts from these guys: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214760

ive been planning on inspecting mine when i get chance in day light. From what i have found surfing the net is the old part number is 11617502275 and the updated part is 11617544805.

once i have inspected mine, i will post my findings.

Very interesting. My engine sounds the same and I have a slight rattle at idle some times. Upon inspection of your DISA, what led you to confirm that that was the culprit? Why do you need to buy a new one over cleaning it like the guy in the linked thread? Thanks. I'll check my DISA out tomorrow and report back.

Unplug the DISA 12v feed. That stops the vacuum pump and opens the flap.

At idle you can instantly tell the difference in noise doing it. Rattles disappear.

Easiest check imho.

At idle, I unplugged the DISA 12v feed and the 'clicking' sound is still lingering. I guess I can cross the DISA off. I also took the DISA out and cleaned the gunk off anyways. I spoke to a BMW certified technician and he said BMW's normally have a rattling sound going on. I'm not sure if I should just leave it at that. :?

My dirty DISA.

Other than that, I made a video of me opening and closing the DISA flap. It makes a rubber type clicking sound. I assume that rubber thing is to protect the electrical/mechanical connection but what is that clicking sound? Also, on each click, you can see the plastic piece shift around. I'm curious if you guys noticed the same thing in yours or if this is normal.

Removed my DISA yesterday after noticing a knocking noise from the top of the engine and renewed interest on the forum. Since last september (~4k miles, 44k miles total on the car) its gone from worn with a bit of looseness on the spring and mild perishing of the rubber seal to the normal failure mode of the pin working its way out the end. Thankfully the pin isn't allowed to pop out too far as it hits the end of the cut out in the manifold. I might be inclined to take it apart with photos once a new one is fitted - I wonder if the pin could escape from the other end and the whole flap sucked into the engine. :)

When moving the flap up and down on the pin it was easy to see the pin was loose, but not necesarily apparent if you just open it rotationally.

Needless to say I have a new one on order from BMW - the old part number is superceeded with the one ending 850 and costs £137.

I did mine at the weekend. i took mine out to find that it seemed pretty clean ? i was expecting it to be fairly dirty given its a late 2003 model with 60k miles on the clock. The central pin had about 1mm of 'play' in it moving left to right, but otherwise seemed in good order and the pin seemed to be fixed solid and showed no signs of coming out.

I then unplugged it and found that there was no difference in engine noise, ie. no rattles. Once cleaned i put it back in and for soem reason the car does feel a little smoother under acceleration, marginal but i am a perfectionist and can notice it very slightly.

The question is then, do i need to replace it with the 1mm play on the pin ? as i said, it moves left & right and the pin feels very secure ?

thanks

If it doesn't rattle it's probably ok. Rattling suggests a worn item that will be wearing more with every single rattle.

Mine moved around, and worked ok, but it also rattled alot!

For reference the pin protruded at least 5mm once pushed back in it would slowly work loose when flexing the flap.
