Rattling : Broken Spring?

Hi,

My Z4 3.0 SE (2003) has developed an annoying rattling sound, I thought it migh have been due to a broken mounting on the undertray so I've taken that off but the rattling persists!

It's not that loud just a "chattering" sound while going over bumps, uneven roads etc, on smooth roads there's no noise, handling doesn't seem affected.

Just wondered if anybody here had similar?

Cheers

 Your inclination sounds like its spot on. The rears are very easy to replace provided you can get hold of the correct size spring.

It's under warranty (Warranty Direct) so it would be going into a Stealer anyway so might have to book it in, it's a damn annoying noise though I can tell you that, it's driving me loopy ;)

Yeah kinda, very "chattery" in nature, honestly thought it was the broken undertray hitting the underneath of the car.

I had a problem recently (problem section of the site), with a rattly clattery noise. A stone had got perfectly stuck on the undertray between engine and tray.

Have you removed the big aluminium tray (8 x 16mm bolts to remove), or just the plastic front one?

Or it could be a spring, they are easy to check if you jack it up and remove the wheel.

Just the plastic front one, not the big aluminium tray, taking it to my friendly garage guys up the road tomorrow so we can have a look under the car.

An annoying rattle on mine turned out to be a broken mounting bracket on the rear exhaust box. Worth wiggling the pipes just to be sure.

Springs, sway bar mount and connections, exhaust hangers... Best thing to do is get it up in the air and look/wiggle everything you can.

Had it up on a four post lift, everything was given a good wiggle and springs are fine but the annoying rattle persists, it sounds like it could be coming from under the dashboard somewhere.

What's the easiest way to take a look under there?

On second thoughts I've wanted to give my local BMW Independant a try so I've booked it into:-

St Ives (Cambridgeshire) to let them have a look.

OK so I found out what it was, the weld on this bar had failed:-

I'm having it re-welded this arvo.
