Hi All,

Just after some opinons, is the rattle you can hear below simply the hydraulic valve lifters or something more sinister? TIA.

Sounds like a lifter & injector symphony to me, is it due an oil change? Do many short journeys? :?

Listen to Smartbear, get it hot, change oil and filter, then again using the genuine Mann filters only.Short runs are not good for these engines. When hot and all's well, should be almost silent

It's just had an oil and filter change. Short jounreys, I suppose it's 50/50 in my ownership as it's normally either a car shuffle on the drive or 15 ish miles to work, little imbetween although obviously not being used too much at present. I suspect the previous owner did do a lot of short journeys in it though.

It does noticeably quieten down when it's hot, that's after it's been sat for an hour or so after a 30 minute run on A roads. I'm going to be doing about 6 hours in it on Saturday so will have another listen after those trips.

Thanks for the advice so far. What do people think to the additives you can get to the oil? Tempted to try that once I need to add a bit more oil then do an oil change again.

It's not unusual for N52 engines to sound like that if they haven't been used much.

Both my E86s did it because neither was a daily so it wasn't unusual for them to not get used for a week or more.

And now my 330i (same engine) is doing it because it's done less than 400 miles since lockdown!

You can be lucky & the noise clears itself from more regular useage from past experience of a Si with this "issue" either learn to live with it , sell it or be prepared to spend a significant sum to silence it :( only had one that did have the noise but tried all grades of oils & various "fixes" that in reality did little , fortunately i had the cams & followers inspected (8ok covered at the time ) & no signs of wear so its not a concern of engine damage more one of annoyance as the N52 that doesn't have the fault is a really quiet engine .

Ah, that might explain it. If I ever make it back into the office before winter it'll see daily use so see if that changes anything.

To be honest I'm not too bothered, it's hardly a car without it's quirks anyway - I just wanted to be doubley sure it's not anything more disastrous looming. I certainly shan't be selling the car, besides you can't hear it at 6000 rpm (only when warm!!!) right

That's fair enough - it's always reassuring to know there isn't some major issue impending!

And you probably won't hear it at tickover when it's fully warmed up, so then it's time for 7,000 rpm.
