Rattle from steering wheel

I bought my car about a month ago and am starting to get to know it. So I have been trying to get rid of some of the rattles and squeaks.

I had a rattle from the steering wheel roughly once per revolution, upon closer inspection there was a completely loose part in between the steering wheel and steering column that I managed to take out. I do not know where the loose part is from, can anyone shed any light on it please? I have taken a picture of the part and it is shown below. (Before anyone says anything I know what the pound coin is and where it is from :lol: )

 
It's a retaining spring of some sort. I'd guess at one holding a switch or similar into the column or dash. The top left part would typically be pushed into a slot in plastic and the other part the retaining spring side.

Could be from anything or anywhere and just dropped into the cowling over time.
 
Could be a sill locating/alignment bracket by the looks of it.

Sort of piece I get left with having spent hours re-assembling something :oops:

Could well be, but unlikely to get into the steering wheel/column, but folks do strange things with cars :)

Agree on being leftover from assembly - I've got a box of such bits that have no home
