Rain Sensing wipers

Hi Guys
When i activate the rain sensing wipers as described in the handbook everything seems to work i.e. it gives the one sweep of the wipers but that seems to be it.....when the rain starts the wipers wont sweep its as if the sensor doesn't sense the rain on the screen and i have to set the wipers on full to clear the screen. Is there a way to check the sensor and how do you get the cover off at the back of the interior mirror. Hope someone out there can help

Just had my front windshield replaced under warranty, because the rain sensor stopped working.

This is what my sensor looked like:

Just to add to this, I had the same problem with my rain sensor along with the wipers parking an inch up the screen on a random basis when on intermittent. The dealer struggled with this for some time and a new sensor had no effect but a replacement control module has solved all the wiper problems along with a nav screen which failed to auto dim. This solution isn't mentioned in the thread quoted by AlanJ so it's worth a mention here.
