Rain at Thunderhill

I took my new Z4 M Coupe out to the track for the first time yesterday. TrackMasters Racing, as always, put on a great event.

The morning was dry. We ran the track counterclockwise (normal).
In the afternoon it rained. We ran the track clockwise (backwards) because there was a race the next day (backwards) and some folks (mostly Spec Miatas) had come out to practice. I had never run that track backwards before, so finding the right lines was a little challenging, but not too difficult.

The car was completely stock: including tires & brakes. I'm used to running on R-Compounds, but the Contis were perfect for the rain. Several other cars, who arrived on race tires, had to stop driving in the afternoon. (more track for me!) While the traction control Nanny didn't flash very often, I'm fairly sure it was doing a bunch of behind-the-scenes work to keep me going fast! I left DSC on all day.

My next track days: Nov 1-2, Infineon. Nov 7-8, back to Thunderhill. This time with R-Compounds, and PFC01 brake pads.

HeadOn Photos was there to capture the day.

Great pics

With you having a few track days booked in, would you consider get another set of tyres with some PS2s or maybe even semi-slicks on?

These look tasty too...

Yup, the new wheels and R-Compound tires arrived yesterday, while I was at the track. I went with Yoko A048s, because TireRack doesn't sell Toyos. Brake pads arrive Monday.

I have never run THill backwards but did run it in the rain a number of years ago with the Golden Gate Audi Club. In mid winter it can really dump at that track and you had better have some tread on that can channel water because there are several parts of the track that are prone to flooding. Between turns 7 and 8 (counterclockwise count) once the infield fills up there is a small river that will flow across the track and with a heavy downpour can reach up to about 50-75 feet wide. Guaranteed hydroplane conditions so you get to practice how to drive through that every lap.

Definitely great lessons in white knuckle driving :D

Nice shots - thnx for sharing

I have a couple of CDs from that photographer at Thunderhill and have always appreciated his efforts.
