Radio has a mind of its own

Hi guys,

I just bought an 03 Z4 (first BMW!) and about two weeks after I got it, some really weird problems with the radio started popping up (I haven't tried using the CD player yet).

Basically, the radio will run fine for a while and then the audio might get really REALLY quiet or go out completely (radio display still works fine) and I won't be able to hear anything for a few minutes and then it'll come back. Sometimes, I might be driving along and then the radio might just suddenly get REALLY LOUD. It's super startling and my friend almost had a heart attack. Oh, and sometimes when I start up the car the time will show "--:--" on the radio (the clock behind the steering wheel is fine) and then after a few minutes it'll show the correct time.

All of the other electrical systems seem to be working fine, it's just the radio...

Does anyone know what might be the source of the problem?
 
Thanks for the replies. From what I've ascertained, it seems that it is a drainage issue as water (not very much) had gotten into the battery compartment and must have been messing with the amp. The amp seems to be completely dead now as it will not play anything anymore. :/
