Hello,
My coupé M needs radar detector for driving in Monaco/France/Italy.
I have noticed most buy Valentine One or Whistler Euro; very expensive though.
What is your experience with these products?
Do you have one, if yes which? What price and where bought?
wating for your comments!
thanks

PVR,
as far as I understood and read on french news, it can be used...
Major French car magazine have done tests...
Do you think they will perform tests and give out results for French drivers if was illegal?
I'm a bit confused than.

No, very illegal:

Add to that :

Policies vary in other countries. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, in a survey of 21 countries, recently found only the United States, Iceland, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and some Canadian provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan) allow radar detectors. In most of the other 14 countries, it is illegal to sell as well as use a detector. In France, for example, a vehicle may be seized if a radar detector is discovered.

PVR,
I trust you 100% for France and I thank you
Therefore the problem is now in Italy cause in Monaco there is not enough speed to take and policemen are frendly with monegasque drivers :D .
Thanks by the way!

I've driven in Italy a few times, there isn't much regard for the speed limit there by Italian drivers, and I didn't see a single cop. So, I wouldn't worry too much.

That being said, they also have lambos for intercept cars, so it's your call! :)

The Beltronics STi Stealth is 100% undetectable by the police radar detector detectors... But it is pricy.
Its the one I own since I live in a state that RD's are illegal.

Let me answer you regarding italy.
In Italy as well radar detectors are illegal (tickets up to 1.000 euro)
Or better, it's legal to own it but it's illegal to use it :D

Mainly, in italy there are two ways to check speed limits.
The tutor and the various velox models.
Velox can be categorized in "fixed" and "movable"
The tutor will measure the average speed, the velox the speed when they "shoot" you.
Regarding the tutor, here you'll find the updated map.
http://www.autostrade.it/assistenza-al-traffico/tutor.html?initPosAra=3_4
Regarding velox I suggest you to update your tomtom device (if you have one) with the list of velox (i can send it to you by mail if you need them).
Italian police provides the list of "fixed" Velox (closed in boxes at the street borsers)

If you need some help and/or translations, just let me know.

I'm Italian as much as you do Ale :D
I'm aware about tutor and autovelox but unfortunatly nowadays police is enforcing the car random controls.
Police hides behind rest areas or long turns, checks your speed and follows you until you turn your engine down by pulling aside.
I want to buy one of those portable radar to avoid having troubles with my licence.
I'm not a fast driver, but I want to be in the safe side when driving 180KM/H on Genova-Milano...
I heard about Valentine One or Whistler (not sure about spelling and name). These seem to be the best on the European market.
Is Valentine detected by police random cars?
thanks

I know this sounds boring, but stick to the speed limits 80% of your trip and have blast when appropriate! :driving: :P

The 'Valentine One' radar detector is a very good unit. But it IS detectable by the police.

The ONLY non-detectable Radar Detector is the Beltronics STi.

Funny, ciau really sounds like if you were coming from Genoa. :)
I heard good things (a few forums but not detector focused) regarding the Cobra XRS-9430 and Cobra XRS-9340 but I've never used any of them.
They are "too cheap" on Ebay so I do not know if they're only toys.

Do they still use radar in Italy then? I thought the moves were to be laser based.

I drove a friend's car last week.
He has the radar/laser detector inside and showed me how it works.
Suddenly, the led started to blink and I slowed down, the random police was behind the corner....
Amazing, worked perfectly.
He said that you can have one in your car but you cannot use it, that made me laugh so high :D
