I own a late pre facelift Z4 on a '55 plate...

When using the remote roof opening feature I've noticed it occasionally freezes mid operation - to get the roof to fully retract I have to get in and fire her up and press the button inside - somewhat negating the coolness of the feature !

Occasionally the drivers window also drops down fully on entering the car as well... but seems to happen at random.

My guess is the previous owner has had some features in the key unlocked/reprogrammed i.e. remote roof and garage feature, but at the cost of reliability ?? Does this seem like a likely diagnosis ?

Going to try the spare key and see if this slightly erratic behaviour continues... if so, looks like it's a trick to my Indy (Highams Park Motor co. - BMWspecialists - v. good by the way, based in London E4)... I hope getting to the bottom of this niggle won't cost too much !

Any thoughts greatly appreciated...
 
Phew !

That's some relief... still, rather annoying all the same. Thinking of disconnecting the negative from the battery to set if this will 'reset' the window to it's default setting and clear the erratic behaviour... I also wonder if the loss in signal could be due to the key not holding much charge in it - I do a lot of short journeys, and I understand key charges from car every time it's plugged in...
 
PatDanz, get yourself a Reinhold One Touch Module, you just press the open or lock button three times and the roof opens or closes without having to hold the button down which is hard to do as you state.

Regarding the window disconnecting the battery will only make matters worse, what you need to do is perform the rest procedure which you have to do after disconnecting the battery as I have found. Do a search and you should find a post or 10 about it, mine sometimes does this and it seems to be an issue with the Multiplexing wiring and a ocassional rouge signal.
 
wise words of advice there srhutch: the window re-initializing procedure does seem to do the trick, as i have found out... until the next time when it occurs ! :headbang:

Thought i'd left behind rogue electrics when I sold my old alfa romeo... :cry:

Thibnk I'm suffring form new car OCD - Z4 forum on a saturday night - I can't leave it alone !

Given the problems I had with my old Alfa, Id rather have the odd half open roof any day :thumbsup:

Ditto mate ! Sods law eh? seems everytime I walk up to my car in an empty car park I can hold the key down at about 20 PACES and by the time I get to grab the door handle th roof is just nestling down,but I got no spectators !. However I was humbly showing the car to some envious workmates on friday and was standing right next to it with my finger on the button,Would it work? would it hell !...... Soon as I got home and tried it in the garage,,GUESS WHAT.

This happens to mine sometimes as well, when using the key. Dont know why though

This is normal and happens if you press the key twice. Its to help you get in the car if there is narrow space
