Quick Ques on Wing mirrors

Hi there,

I've been to see a Z4 roadster this weekend but amongst the myriad of questions I did have for the owner I forgot to check that the wingmirrors fold in (my garage is pretty tight!) I believe from what I have read on here that electric folding wing mirrors were an option. Can someone tell me do the normal (standard) wingmirrors manually fold in (or up) or are they fixed in place?

Thanks very much for any help

Great thanks for that.

Just hope I can physically get out once the car is in the garage. I'm working to a total width (including mirrors) of 1904mm that I got from the handbook. Garage entrance is 2130mm and widens to 2380 inside. Am I kidding myself?

Thanks again

Having just looked, I can tell you that the rear of the car is pretty much as wide as it is at the wing mirrors, and the doors are about 100mm in from the tips of them.

All wing mirrors on current UK cars fold (not all electrically) as part of the impact safety features.

I've folded mine before to check - they were quite stiff compared to previous cars. Unfortunately recently someone veered onto my side of the road and hit mine. It didn't fold but instead sheared off

DaveG - an often forgotten area of maintenance. As the wing mirror joint sits in the full force of all water and crud that comes of the road (and when you wash the car - caution all of you whose use a pressure washer) the folding joint can often become extremely stiff hence its reduced ability to fold. A 'wash' through with WD40 or similar does wonders.

If you want to try folding them in grasp the mirror with both hands and twist it about the cut line between the shell and the mount. It will end facing backwards and up about 45 degrees.

I do it everytime I wash the car to drain water out as I hate it dripping down for hours afterwards while I'm trying to dry, polish, wax, etc.

BTW beware folding the mirrors in to get though gaps - the rear arches are wide and vulnerable!!!

Top post - thanks. Hope it prevents the same happening to others.

Dealer kindly brought the car around and it fits (just), pick up my new wheels later this week and can't wait.

Thanks for the friendly advice, I can say with some confidence I'll be back to this forum.
