Question about tyre wear

Hi all,

I have a question about tyre wear and whether you think this is acceptable.
I took the Merc to be serviced this week. All was fine but they commented on the front tyre wear.
The car is a C300 estate. It has 19” AMG wheels on it. Tyres are Continental ContiSport 225/40/R19.

The car has done 6500 miles and was new in March last year. The tread is down to 4mm on the front and 5mm on the back. Tyre wear is even. The service guy said to ‘keep an eye on it’ and it might be that they’re just ‘a soft tyre’... and maybe choose another brand next time. What a unhelpful and silly thing to say.

Does this seem excessive?

Thanks

On a RWD car you’d normally expect the rears to wear faster.

For example, when my Z4M was a daily driver I got about 18,000 miles out of the front Conti M3 tyres and about 10,000 out of the rears. I get almost double that on more modern tyres (i.e.Michelin Supersports).

Maybe Mercedes have decided ride comfort, handling & grip is more important than tyre wear?

Not savagely, not harshly, I drive normally with the odd bit of more spirited driving here and there.
The car doesn’t do mega miles or sit on the motorway for hours on end,
I also check the pressures regularly.

I think you will find that 8 or 10k miles out of ContiSport's is not unusual, depending on the car and driving style of course.

Have you measure the depths yourself Dan ? Call me cynical but i don't trust any main dealer when it comes to upselling tyres & brakes
Re the latest Conti6 which i'm assuming you are running , , short life is a known negative of them

Contisport tyres for the last few models have been a fairly soft tyre that wear much faster than the equivalent Goodyear or Michelin, unfortunately

Still odd that the fronts wear more than the rears. Do you have to do a lot of manoeuvring at low speed, turning the wheel without any rolling motion, scrubbing the tyres? Even so, would take a lot.
